Center for Wellness Leadership Symposium 2016: Integrative Health in Athletic Performance Where Eastern Medicine Meets Western Medicine

T

he Center for Wellness Leadership (CWL) is a new nonprofi t orga- nization based in Portland established to raise awareness for Com- plementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Such practices include acupuncture, yoga, mind body medicine, naturopathy and more. CWL has complied a thorough database to serve as a one-stop resource for information surrounding all CAM modalities that aid in overall well- ness. The goal of CWL is to advance public knowledge surrounding the physical and mental benefi ts of alternative medicinal practices when used alone or in conjunction with western medicine. CWL will hold its fi rst signature symposium event: Integrative Health in Athletic Perfor- mance on October 29th.

The symposium will explore how complementary and alternative

therapies enhance athletic performance, reduce injuries and improve mental focus. The event will bring together leading practitioners in Na- turopathy, Homeopathy, Chinese Medicine and Osteopathy to educate our community on how these methods complement athletic activity and health regimens. A panel of professional athletes, including Dave Cowens of the Celtics, will discuss their experiences using alternative medicine, as well as Dr. Diane Hayden, Publisher of Essential Living Maine Magazine.

Athletes, yogis, coaches, practitioners, physicians and the general public are encouraged to attend the CWL 2016 Symposium. Through- out the day there will be a variety of presentations, networking oppor- tunities, food, and more.

The Symposium is being held from 8:15am to 2:30pm at the

University of Southern Maine Hannaford Hall in Portland, Maine. Free & Early bird special tickets available. Discounts are available for CWL members, CAM practitioners and guests from sponsoring organiza- tions. Tickets include access to all presentations, networking breaks, breakfast and lunch.

Wild and Alive - Maine's First 100% Certifi ed Organic Raw Vegan Chocolate Line

greener, healthier and ethi- cally sourced ingredients, the world of chocolate is getting more interesting ev- ery year. This is no different in Maine, where brand new company Wild and Alive just released the state's fi rst 100% certifi ed organic, raw and vegan line of chocolate bars. The chocolates are handmade in small batches in Thomaston and have both MOFGA and USDA organic certifi cations. What distinguishes Wild and Alive's bars further are their raw status, meaning that the cacao butter, cacao powder and other in- gredients have not been heated beyond 118F, and are thus said to retain more nutritional value. They're also gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free and contain no GMOs, no additives and no refi ned sugar. Moreover, the nuts in the chocolates' fi llings are never roasted or baked.

S

“We use soaked and low-temperature dehydrated nuts. In nature, nuts that fall off the tree in autumn begin to germinate and grow when exposed to the moisture and warmth of spring. Soaking mimics this process which disables tannins and toxins inside the nut that were keeping it from premature sprouting. This leaves a lighter, easier-to-di- gest nut with enhanced nutrient availability”, explains Judith Whiting, German transplant to Maine and co-owner of Wild and Alive. “And they're yummier than any chocolate I've ever had! Wally VanCoco and Almond Buddha are favorites right now but the others are hot contenders. I'm usually more of a savory snacker but Judith's choco- lates got me hooked”, says David Whiting, who owns Wild and Alive along with his wife.

The couple has embarked on their chocolate venture after years

of working in the health food industry in Europe, New Zealand and the US. In late 2012 they returned to the US with their daughters Mia and Jamie, after David fi nished his Bachelor of Naturopathy along with diplomas in Herbal Medicine and Nutrition in New Zealand. Having lead a raw food lifestyle for over 10 years, the family teamed up with Dave Conrardy, aka the raw food trucker, and went on a 3 1/2 months, 100 city U.S. Wellness Tour in 2013. After a brief interlude in Edinburgh, Scotland, they fi nally settled in David's native Maine “with the intention of putting down some roots, planting our own food forest and going into business for ourselves while contributing to our communities' well-being and chocolate enjoyment”, they write on their website. Right now, they're offering 6 fl avors of 70% chocolate covered fi llings in 2 sizes, medium 1.4oz or large 2oz bars, and are hoping to expand their line soon to include a small 'domelet' size and a few more fl avors. Wild and Alive bars are available at health food stores, stores featuring Maine made products and the co mpany's online shop at www.wildandaliveorganics.com .
