or many of us September signals back to school and back in the groove of focusing on our work and achieving goals. It’s always a little melancholy for me because summer is my favorite season and I hate to see it go. And while I do love many things that fall brings (crisp mornings, gorgeous foliage, the smell of fallen leaves, my favorite holiday - Halloween, and my favorite kind of beer – Pumpkin!), it’s also a reminder to me that winter is not far behind and I am NOT a cold weather person.
What does get me excited though, is the opportunity to refocus on my goals for the
year and refl ect on what I’ve already accomplished. This month we asked the question – “What’s one dream you’ve seen fulfi lled?” This was a hard question to answer for me because I’ve been lucky enough to have a number of dreams fulfi lled. Of course starting Natural Nutmeg and Essential Living Maine magazine was a huge dream that came to fruition for me, and I’m so grateful for all of the advertisers, writers and readers like you who have supported us for almost 10 years! Another dream that I fulfi lled in my career was speaking for a direct marketing company on a stage in a coliseum fi lled with close to 20,000 people – that was a surreal experience and defi nitely one of the most exciting times in my life.
On a personal level, my biggest dream was to have a partner that I could travel with
and work from anywhere in the world and that is happening now! This month we are off to Italy and Spain for a month long trip where we’ll be exploring: hiking in the Dolomites and Cinque Terre, wine and agritourism in Tuscany, tapas in Barcelona and Palma and of course the amazing food everywhere! We’ll keep you updated on all of the amazing places we fi nd on our Facebook and Instagram sites – please LIKE us at https://www.face-

t’s hard to believe the end of summer is upon us. Boy does time fl y especially when we’re having fun! We were so fortunate to have gorgeous weather this year and I’m hoping you took some time to be present to enjoy it. What do I mean by being present? Let me give you an example. I am a very social person and don’t like going to the beach alone, but this summer on one particular day I decided to since I couldn’t fi nd anyone else to go with. As I was sitting on the beach, reading my book and feeling a little lonely, I started watching a group
of children playing in the water near me. Two small groups of boys and girls had come together to play with water toys and a raft, even though moments before they were com- plete strangers. The girls jumped in the raft and the boys were pulling them around with a rope. As they were enjoying the ride, a couple of the water toys started fl oating away and fl oated all the way to the other end of the beach. It was in that moment that I realized they were being present. They were so enjoying the moment, that they were oblivious to everything else around them especially their toys fl oating away. My next thought was that I also was being present because I was paying attention to what was happening right then instead of thinking about what else I should be doing or who I wish was at the beach with me. Living in the moment and being present makes us mindful of where we are right now and not worry about the past or the future. When you become mindful, you realize that you are not your thoughts; you become an observer of your thoughts from moment to moment without judging them. The result of being present is that instead of letting your life go by without living it, you actually awaken to experience it.
