truck at a time. Eventually he was running seven trucks, one of which he drove while dispatching the other six. From the road, he would use early generation cell phones to call a tower and then be billed for long-distance calls from it. “I would call customers and try to get loads


lined up and have a notepad and try to scribble things down, it made if very stressful,” he said. “And then I’d get the information, and I’d pass it along to the driver that needed it. Yeah, by the end of the day, I was pretty tired.” Ten one day he came to a realization: He


was paying so much for the mobile telephone service and AT&T vcard to contact long distance customers. He knew he needed to get out of the truck, do his own dispatching, and grow. Meanwhile, the company’s offices moved.


Kilthau Transports had been based in Melbeta, a small town five miles from the farm and a block from his daughters’ schools. By 1990, the daughters were attending school in Gering, so the family moved its home and the company there. By 2000, he was hitting his peak—at one time running 26 trucks. Today, Kilthau

Transports runs 24 trucks and 34 trailers. Its 26 stainless steel insulated trailers haul agricultural commodities such as fertilizer, molasses, soybean oil, weed sprays and liquid feed. Six petroleum tankers transport gasoline and diesel, and the company also has two hoppers. Te company has 20-full-time drivers


and six part-timers, all company employees, plus four staff members working on the trucking side and more than 50 employees among its three entities: Kilthau Transports, a Shell convenience store/truck stop, and a truck washout facility.
