“I’m very happy and extremely proud of my gym’s success. In just over two years, it is running in the black totally debt-free.”
Making small work While I was originally concerned
with the small size—1,200 sq. ft.—of my gym, I have discovered that its in- timate size and moderate choices in equipment have turned out to be very attractive features. I have dis- covered that it is possible to train adequately with just a few bands and maybe 10 square feet of space per person. It’s no surprise to me that once clients have experienced a workout at my gym, they quickly re- alize that all that big-gym space re- ally isn’t necessary. That being said, when you’re work-
ing with a smaller area, it’s impor- tant that every inch be used wisely. At Simply Fit Canada, the gym is divided into three main areas. The cardio area is on the mezzanine, while the ground floor is divided into a static side for weighted exercises and benches and a movement side that includes turf and a Prowler. This set-up controls traffic and eliminates problems with some- one lunging behind a person who is squatting or benching. I knew right away that with the size

of the gym, I would need a reservation system to avoid overcrowding. I de- cided to use the online program Check Appointments. Clients reserve a train- ing time, whether they are working with a trainer or on their own. We can accommodate three trainers and their clients simultaneously without step- ping on each others’ toes. Over the past two years, there have
been many successes and many les- sons learned. One thing that helped greatly was listening and learning from successful people who have been in business for many years. I didn’t fol- low through on everything they sug- gested, but I listened and then made my own decisions. I am very happy and extremely
proud of my gym’s success. In just over two years, it is running in the black to- tally debt-free. If you had asked me three years ago
if a small gym could be more profit- able per square foot than a big gym, I would have laughed. I guess it just shows that size doesn’t actually mat- ter, it’s just all your perception of the size. FBC
