Take cash
Vendors are working with portable pay- ment equipment that may be slow and unreliable. Cash is always easier for a quick sale, which gives you time to get to your next session! For larger purchases, credit a card is likely the best option.

or sticking with your own people, arrive at sessions early and sit beside and in- troduce yourself to someone you don’t know. Sometimes strangers can be great resources and networking contacts who you would never have met if you hadn’t stepped out of your comfort zone.

sions from streams that aren’t my standard stream and aren’t my area of expertise. This way I come home with a broader range of tips, ideas and strategies, which oſten leads to all kinds of positive outcomes when I apply them to my existing work.

Use your phone
cially for unique or long choreography combinations. I always quickly video- tape myself or a friend doing our favou- rite combinations right aſter a session. I ask friends to show me favourite combi- nations they learned in sessions I didn’t attend, and I video them as well. When I need something new for a class, I just refer to my phone and don’t have to de- cipher a handout. I also audiotape impor- tant lectures so I can review them later. My iPhone picks up lectures really well as long as the audio speakers are fairly loud and/or if I'm sitting two to three rows from the speaker.

peakers’ choreography notes are sometimes hard to understand espe-
hen a conference has different streams, I like to choose a few ses-
ahead of time and if the conference has an app, which is another means of con- necting with conference goers. Retweet key messages that resonate with your spe- cialty area, and send your own tweets by framing your learnings and reactions to conference content. And don’t be afraid to promote yourself a bit. For example, today I’m connecting with several hun- dred physical education teachers, many of whom are tweeting and following social media and who are at a conference over 10 hours away, that I am unable to attend. Our company is currently offering a special on equipment for schools.
I I tweeted this
out using the conference hashtag, and the conference organizer retweeted it to its 649 followers! I also tweeted about one of our instructors, promoting a last-minute workout she was offering at the confer- ence. For all this exposure, I invested just 15 minutes of time and reached hundreds of teachers.

Make a connection M
any conference attendees attend on their own and are happy to meet
someone new, like you! While standing in the registration line, make casual conver- sation with the person in front or behind you. Ask something like: “Is this your first time to the conference?” or “What ses- sions are you looking forward to most?” In sessions, try to sit at a table with people you haven’t met before, and strike up a conversation with them. At the wine and cheese reception, make an effort to min- gle rather than hide in the corners of the room. And if you make an effort to only refer to your cellphone back at your room, you’ll make even more valuable connec- tions with people you would not have oth- erwise met.
