news 7 Research excellence honoured Academics were honoured at Portsmouth Business School's research and innovation conference

More than 150 people – the largest attendance to date – took part in the 12th annual event, which included a keynote speech by Professor Debi Saini of the Management Development Institute in Gurgaon, India.

Two researchers from the Organisation Studies and Human Resource Management (OSHRM) subject group shared the prize for best research paper published in 2015.

Vijay Pereira's paper analysed the survey responses provided by 1,271 human resources professionals employed by Indian Railways regarding their experiences of recruitment and selection, training, employee welfare and employment relations experiences. The £5,000 prize was shared with Sarah Gilmore, whose paper employed an ethnographic approach to examine how self-reflection affects the way power dynamics and emotion are

interpreted within a workplace environment.

The £5,000 prize for best research paper by an early career researcher was also shared by two researchers working on different aspects of banking regulation. Jose Carrasco- Gallego (economics and finance) analysed the most effective implementation and likely welfare effects of the new Basel III banking regulations in his paper, published in the Journal of Financial Stability.

The focus of the paper by Song Zhang (accounting and financial management) examined relationship banking and small business liquidity in an era of growing concentration in the banking and financial services sector.

The 2015 dissemination prize, also worth £5,000, was also won by an early career researcher, Nicholas Ford (strategy, enterprise and innovation) for the publicity provoked by his research into how

the packaging of supermarket goods can leave ‘older' consumers feeling powerless and vulnerable. All the winners were presented with their prizes by Professor Gioia Pescetto, Dean of PBS.

Professor Andy Thorpe, associate dean for research in the faculty, commented: “It was gratifying

to see such a large number of colleagues and external parties at the event. The decision to incorporate both Doctor in Business Administration and PhD students events into the day worked very well, and it was a great way to introduce our new professors to the breadth of the research we are undertaking here.”
