Indifference to digitisation holds back manufacturing, says BDO


A report by accountancy and business-advisory firm BDO LLP, produced in association with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, finds that only 8% of UK manufacturers have a significant understanding of the advanced digitisation processes known as Industry 4.0, despite 59% recognising the impact the new digital opportunities will have on the sector.


As the increasing use of automation, data exchange, technology and wider supply-chain communications driven by Industry 4.0 provides both huge opportunities and threats to UK manufacturing, the lack of education about and understanding of it is a “gaping hole”'....

According to the paper, almost two thirds (63%) of small business owners in the UK are over 50. Of those over 60, two thirds (64%) have no clear succession plan and are postponing seeking a sale....
