Technology Centre on the University of Southampton campus, with a view to taking advantage of the city and region's marine expertise.


The £450m plus Royal Pier Waterfront development will create a world- class waterfront at Royal Pier. Plans include 800m waterfront with full public access; shops, waterside restaurants, cafés and bars, a major new Epicurean Market, a casino run by Aspers, apartments, hotels and office development.


The development involves an extension to Mayflower Park, the provision of a permanent and improved home for the Southampton Boat Show and other waterfront events, and the creation of new passenger facilities for Red Funnel at Trafalgar Dock.


Due to open next summer is Southampton's only luxury five- star standard hotel – the new Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa at Ocean Village – while hotel chains Marriott and Premier Inn are investing in the city.

centres across the UK taking part in the 100,000 genomes project.


Elsewhere, the University of Southampton is recognised as a leader in cancer immunology research and a major £25m fundraising campaign is currently underway to open a world-leading Centre for Cancer Immunology in 2017, with the latest state-of-the-art facilities designed to attract leading scientists from all over the world.


On the education front, Southampton boasts two

Baxendale credits a proactive approach and strong partnership working with the city's success.


However, even with all the development in progress, she is not satisfied, concluding: “The momentum continues to build – the hunger is always there to keep improving and while it's good to celebrate success, we will never rest on our laurels. It's always about looking at where we are going next.”
