Housebuilders and construction companies feature prominently in the Solent SME 100 Growth Index this year

From Wyatt Homes, and Ankers and Rawlings to Forman Homes, building homes has been a way of building turnover along the South Coast in the past year.

Roofing products, heating and air-conditioning, garden fencing, and floor manufacturers have all benefited from the British preoccupation with bricks and mortar.

The SME 100 Growth Index is compiled by The Business Magazine, and sponsored by leading corporate finance advisers Spectrum and top South Coast law firm Coffin Mew.

The index is based on sales growth over a 12-month period. The combined sales of the top 100 SMEs is over £1.2 billion, and they employ almost 11,000 people – evidence of the significant impact that SMEs have on the South Coast economy.

Poole-headquartered Wyatt Homes is at the top of the list – although we have had to use 2014 figures as latest results were not available until after we went to press. Wyatt Homes has been building luxury apartments and houses for many years and has won a strong reputation for its waterside developments at Sandbanks.

Astute of Bournemouth is at number two. Astute is an IT lead generation and telemarketing specialist, with clients such as BT and Virgin Media. Managing director Paul Woods founded the company in 1998, and he said: “Astute was born from a vision I had when working in the technological field. I saw a gap in

the market to create a marketing entity which would introduce a tech company's innovative products and services directly into the hands of the exact businesses that it was designed to serve.”

Langmead Farms is at number three. The Group is a diverse business, consumer-focused and probably best known as a supplier of fresh herbs to UK and Spanish retailers. Langmead is in its fifth generation as a family business.

The Solent SME 100 Growth Index is a listing of private UK businesses that are based in an area that takes in Hampshire, much of Dorset, plus parts of Wiltshire and West Sussex.
