surroundings and don’t set fire to your local national park. At home, anyone with the most basic DIY skills can construct a brick barbecue which will be the envy of the neighbours. A simple grill and pan to hold the charcoal is less than £20 – and can be stored indoors in winter to protect it from the elements. Of course, you can spend almost as much on a premier, six-ring gas-burning barbecue as you would on the cooker in your kitchen. If you have shelter from the elements and plan to do a lot of outdoor entertaining, the investment might be worthwhile, but for most folk, a bit of kit which sits somewhere in the mid-price range is perfectly adequate. One of the best barbecues I ever
attended was cooked on half an oil drum, turned on its side, with a vast metal grill on top. It rained. But the food was fab.
Michelin star barbecue cleaning tips
Michelin star chef Steve Smith has provided his tips on how to clean your barbecue as easily and as quickly as possible. Regular cleaning is important to prevent food poisoning and to prolong the life of your cooking equipment. After you have wined and dined your guests, the last thing you want to do is start cleaning.
Pre-heat the grill Clean the grill just after preheating it, this way the grease and food will scrape off easily.
Grab an onion To remove all of the grit, place a half cut onion on the end of a fork and rub onto a hot grill.

Prevent rusting Clean the grill with soapy water, rinse and dry immediately and rub vegetable oil on the grill to prevent rust.
Don’t throw water If you are using a charcoal grill, then do not throw cold water over the coals after cooking as this will create a mess.
