Editor’s Message I

love hearing from our readers. It is part of what makes Te Hub such a great publication to work on. Readers send in photos with their magazine from every corner of the earth. Some just want to share their photos with us and don’t want them to be published. Tank you for thinking of us and including us on your journey! Others are devastated that they

forgot the publication. To that I say, so what? Take a photo and send it anyways! Others take Te Hub everywhere, sending in multiple photos with it on their journey — how fantastic! Some of the interesting stories I enjoy hearing are where our readers tell me they have found copies of our magazine. Last year, one of our readers was waiting for a connecting flight in Chicago when lo and behold, on the bench beside him was a copy of Te Hub! It was the first time he had read the publication and was surprised to find it in Chicago. At a trade show this past spring, a gentleman approached me and said, “Have I got a story for you!”. It turns out he was on vacation in Puerto Vallarta, and while he was flipping through the local magazines and information left for them in the room, he found a copy of Te Hub. How serendipitous, I mean, what are the chances of a Winnipegger picking up a magazine in a hotel room left behind by another Winnipegger? Te one thing that I have learned from our readers is that they are all passionate about our

province. Tey use our publication to share their love of their homeland. We are pleased to provide interesting stories to share and educate others. Winnipeg is not a map dot to look over as you’re passing by; Manitoba is a worthwhile place to visit. Where else can you find such friendly and welcoming people? On my vacation, I too brought a few copies of the magazine for some friends and gave the others away to people we knew on the beach. Well it started something alright — I had up to 10 people reading the magazine on the beach. I gave out every copy I had and I took photos of everyone. Unfortunately, some of my photos were corrupted, so I apologize and send a special thank you to some wonderful people I know from Cancun.

flight leaves just after midnight outbound passengers are required to be at the airport the day before their flight departs. We see a lot of early morning departures in the winter with flights to hot spots, but this is new for our summer schedule. Do your best to have a nap on this ‘red-eye’ and hit the ground running when you arrive in Halifax at 6:00 a.m. local time. You’ll have a whole day for exploring or making connections to other destinations in the region. Added to Winnipeg Richardson International Airport’s customer service program in Decem-

ber, we are proud to highlight our therapy dog program in this issue. In partnership with St. John Ambulance of Manitoba, we have a team of dogs and their handlers who offer a softer side to the hustle and bustle of the airport. Passengers, airport visitors and employees alike appreciate when the dogs are on site. Tis issue also features an article on homegrown artist, Wanda Koop. While many of her pieces are available for rent through the Canada Council Art Bank, at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport we have our own permanent art installations. If you are waiting to board your flight, then you probably passed Aperture by another local artist, Warren Carther. Located in the space we call Queen’s Court, Aperture was created with layers of glass and glows in the heart of the departures hold room. Art lovers are encouraged to explore three installations in the public spaces too: Inside Ice by Joel Berman and Where the sky began – a map of the land by Nancy Chew and Jacqueline Metz, both located on the arrivals level; and Incoming by Ione Torlaksson near the security check point on the departures level. Summer is a great time to be in the airport. We hope you come for a visit and explore!
