Hot Eats in The ‘Peg

Fools & Horses 379 Broadway

Fools & Horses is a lovely, unclut- tered space where I had previously enjoyed coffee and toast on the sidewalk patio. My eldest daugh- ter is a regular here, as are the nu- merous people her age, perched in front of their laptops and tablets or snuggled up with a coffee, sit- ting shoulder to shoulder. Te food offerings are simple

yet excellent. Toast is the star of the show. We ordered a sharing platter which came laden with a smoky Bothwell cheese, an- other artisan cheese, a couple of sliced sausage meats, roasted nuts, homemade

pickles (loved the

beans and ginger), espresso, Di- jon mustard and luscious fig jam. Pieces of just grilled bread accom- panied the platter which provided us with an affordable and light supper. foolsandhorses.ca

Smith 75 Forks Market Road

Live like a tourist in your own town. Spend time at the Inn at the Forks for a Winnipeg staycation, and treat yourself to dinner or lunch at Smith. My visit with three friends began with a bottle of 14 Hands Merlot. Our waiter was very accommodating and gave us lots of time to place our orders. Te four of us were on the same

page when it came time to place our orders. We ordered a platter made up of their classic buttermilk fried chick- en, the salmon special with a seared pineapple salsa and a number of sides including the truffle oil and asiago French fries, Brussel sprouts with maple syrup and pecans, and the root vegetable and yam gratin. Being good friends, we all shared from a commu- nal plate. Te conversation comfortably

flowed as we nibbled on little tastes of each dish over the course of the eve- ning. Before departing we decided to share the delightful lemon tarts to cap off our evening. smithrestaurant.ca
