WHAT ARE YOU PROUD OF?

June is traditionally the “official” month

of Pride. Several things have put me in a thoughtful frame of mind about what that actually means these days. The big snafu around L.A. Pride and Christopher Street West’s communication of its changes, really left me (and a whole lot of other people) with a sense of “We’re the cool kids, we want to have a party and you’re not invited.” Maybe that’s an oversimplification, but the sense of “Appealing to the Millennial” as described, coupled with the increased prices and the reduction and/or cancellation of several key events, made it pretty clear, however unintentional, that not all were welcomed to the party. We are a diverse group and that diversity can sometimes, frankly, be a difficult challenge. We all want what we want and have our own ideas on how to get there. Working together in the face of those challenges requires that we look at the world broadly—not from just one singular perspective—especially when it comes to something as important as Pride and the very community that inspired it. We survived HIV/AIDS,because as a community we banded together in the face of it and fought hard. We fought against our own shame, ignorance and fear and that of an entire world—one that in many ways—would just as soon have had us disappear into the oblivion towards which we were heading. We fought endlessly against allowing that oblivion to consume us, for the right to survive and to not be marginalized as we were dying. It was a war for our very existence. We learned something about ourselves in the process: We were worth fighting for and stronger as a community and

must never allow ourselves to be ignored or marginalized again. We have come a very long way since those

dark days to be sure, which ironically, is something to be just as proud of. We can marry, we can have families and we can have lives that many of us couldn’t even begin to imagine, when those initial stirrings of being “different” began. Like everything in life, things must evolve and change. It is the nature of the animal. To be sure, Pride must evolve as well; it is as inevitable as the passing of the many generations who participate in its festivities. Whether it’s a music festival in Los Angeles, a street fair in your hometown, or a group of LGBT friends on a country road in the middle of nowhere, it’s about coming together to celebrate who we are...All of us. Our diversity is where our strength lies and inclusion is the framework that supports that strength. Pride is about all the colors in our vast, LGBT community, the whole of it.

There are not more than five musical notes, yet the combinations of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard. There are not more than five primary colors, yet

in combination they produce more hues than can ever been seen. There

are not more than five cardinal tastes, yet combinations of them yield more flavors than can ever be tasted.” — Sun Tzu,The Art of War
