¡Pachanga de Frida! Each year, the San Diego LGBT Center’s Latino Services holds


one of the organization’s signature fundraising events when it celebrates the birthday of Frida Kahlo. This year’s ¡Pachanga de Frida! ¡Arte! ¡Vida! ¡ Y Tequila! or Happy Birthday Frida! Art! Life! and Tequila! takes place in the auditorium at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, 3909 Center Street on Saturday, June 11. Join host Edgar Gallego in celebration of this legendary artist, as you dance to the Latin sounds of Manny Cepeda Orchestra and DJ La Voz, with food provided by Baja Betty’s, beer from Hillcrest Brewing Company, premium Tequila margaritas and shots as provided by event sponsor, Frida Kahlo Tequila. Avant Garde Costume Gala The Mingei International Museum is one of


the many treasures that lure visitors to Balboa Park. Established in 1978, the Mingei (which liter- ally means art of the people, was coined by revered Japanese philosopher Soetsu Yanagi) collects, conserves and exhibits arts of daily use, by anony- mous craftsmen of ancient times, from traditional cultures of past and present and by historical and contemporary designers. On Saturday, June 25, they will be hosting their unique annual fundraiser, the Avant Garde Costume Gala, which celebrates the creative soul. Best described by the Mingei, it’s “A wild and wonderful evening of creative and sensory pleasure. Wear your wildest, most unique or thought-provoking costume or accessories, as you enjoy live performances by some of the region’s most unique artists.” The event features delicious creations by more than a dozen of the area’s culinary artisans, Baja wine varieties and craft cocktails, live body painting, an Avant Garde photo station, eccentrically costumed characters and a unique fashion show filled with designers who push the parameters of ingenuity. San Diego Equality Awards Equality California’s mission, “Is to achieve


and maintain full and lasting equality, ac- ceptance and social justice for all people in our diverse LGBT communities, inside and outside of California. This includes advancing the health and well-being of LGBT Californians through direct healthcare service and education as well as through electoral, advocacy, education and mobilization programs.” The organization strives to create a broad and diverse alliance of LGBT people, educators, government officials, com- munities of color and faith, labor, business and social justice communities to achieve our goals. The national organization is dedicated to recog- nizing individuals and organizations who have made an impact on the LGBT movement and will be celebrating local achievers at its annual Equality Awards. The event, A Celebration of Families at The Prado in Balboa Park on Friday, June 17, will feature The State Farm Good Neighbor Award recipients Ofelia Barba and her daughters, Zoey Luna and Letty Barba; Equality Vanguard Award recipientsBM1(SW) Matthew A. Alvarado and Brian L. Alvarado and Equality Leadership Award-winners, the Matys-Gleason Family, with more to be announced. Varsity Gay League Feeling the need to exercise, but hate the idea of spending all your days sweating inside your local gym? Well, there’s a solution to that conundrum... join a local LGBT sports team and burn some calo- ries, with the added bonus of making new friends along the way. There are several opportunities to partake in a team sport and according to the Varsity Gay League San Diego website, the age require- ment is 21 to 99! If tossing heavy things is what gets your heart rate going, then co-ed bowling is a good fit for you. the San Diego Bowling League summer session at the East Village Tavern+Bowl, begins on June 13, with a 10-week run ending on August 15. If avoiding things is your forte, then we suggest the San Diego Dodgeball Team. Games take place from June 21 through August 9 at the North Park Recreation Center. If you were one of those kids that kicked people or objects and ran when frustrated, then take a gander at the San Diego Kickball League. Their eight-week co-ed summer session runs from June 19 through August 21 at the Morley Field Sports Complex. And finally, if you’d love to send round objects careening into the air with your bare hands, wrists or forearms, then we recommend the San Diego Indoor Vol- leyball League. The Balboa Park Activity Center is the location for this eight-week co-ed summer session from June 22 to August 10. No excuses now, get out there and start hitting, kicking, toss- ing and dodging! Hillcrest Wind Ensemble Signaling the start of summer’s musical delights, the


Hillcrest Wind Ensemble presents their summer cabaret concert, Blast to the Past. Join them at the Mississippi Room inside the historic Lafayette Hotel, 2223 El Cajon Boulevard in North Park on Friday, June 24 for an eve- ning of music from the ’60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, featuring your favorite TV tunes as well as music from The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Queen, Eagles and The Carpenters, with a special tribute to Prince. Local favorite, Kevin Cavanaugh and retro lounge act, Blue Velvet, will also be on hand to provide special guest performances. For 2016, the series returns to present a very special panel of national newsmakers for its homecom- ing, following three years on tour in places like the National Press Club in Washington D.C. including two engagements at the Los Angeles Press Club, as well as other cities.
