MULTI MILLION POUND DEMENTIA PROGRAMME
TO CONTINUE Health Minister Simon Hamilton has confirmed that the Delivering Social Change Dementia Signature Programme, Dementia Together NI, will continue.
The Minister said, “It is important that I provide support and clarity to existing projects that aim to improve dementia services in Northern Ireland. The Dementia Signature Programme, being taken forward by my Department as part of the Delivering Social Change framework, is one such project.”
This particular Delivering Social Change programme, worth over £6m with expenditure in 2016/17 expected to be in the region of £2.8m, aims to raise awareness, information and support for people living with a dementia; deliver training and development for those in the caring professions, both formally and informally; and provide respite, short breaks and support for carers.
The Health Minister went on to say that next year the programme will resource Dementia Navigators in each of the five Trusts and Dementia Champions throughout Northern Ireland.
The Minister also stated that, “This programme, which is funded jointly by the NI Executive and The Atlantic Philanthropies under the auspices of the Delivering Social Change framework, will lead to a significant improvement in the quality of dementia care. It will support people living with dementia to maintain their independence and live well with the condition for as long as possible.
“It is hoped that the long term benefits of the programme will be an improved understanding of dementia in wider society, with benefits in primary and secondary prevention and reduced stigma.” Delivering Social Change is the Executive’s framework, set up to tackle poverty and social exclusion. It aims to deliver a sustained reduction in poverty and associated issues across all ages and to improve children and young people’s health, well-being and life opportunities thereby breaking the long term cycle of multigenerational problems.

Exploring effective professional leadership in Northern Ireland
Pharmacy Forum NI has recently published the ‘Exploring Effective Professional Leadership in Northern Ireland’ discussion paper.
The aim of the paper is to open discussion about ‘what professional leadership in Northern Ireland looks like for all pharmacists’, and the paper examines the future of pharmacy leadership and the essential elements of a local leadership body.
The paper examines the current state of leadership for pharmacists in Northern Ireland and outlines what the Pharmacy Forum NI sees as the future for a local leadership body in Northern Ireland.
It outlines its case for a strong and effective local professional leadership body, highlighting that a local body is needed to ensure pharmacists can continue to provide critical services and importantly deliver on new models of practice involving pharmacy in a devolved and rapidly changing health and social care environment.
The paper also examines how a pharmacy leadership body must also have input into national discussions and European and worldwide pharmacy developments.
In the paper the Pharmacy Forum NI Board has identified key ‘Essential Elements of a pharmacy leadership body’ as: Leadership, Support, Development, Technology and Excellence.
The paper sets out the challenges facing not only pharmacists but also the patients and the public.
Speaking to Pharmacy in Focus Roberta Tasker, Chair of the Pharmacy Forum NI, said, “The aim of this paper is to stimulate debate and create the passion and inspiration for pharmacists in Northern Ireland to engage in
Roberta Tasker
building a leadership body that is ‘fit for future’ to fulfil their own development needs and that of the profession in the interests of our patients and the public.
“We have honestly examined our impact as the professional leadership body for pharmacists in Northern Ireland and outlined why we haven’t made the full impact that was envisaged since our creation in 2013. Throughout this process our focus has always been ‘What do pharmacists and the public need from this leadership body?’
“We have engaged with some of our stakeholders to explore how we can take the next step in our professional journey. The world of pharmacy is ever evolving and we (Pharmacy Forum NI) want to help our profession by providing leadership and support to all pharmacists wherever their field of practice may be.
“The Minister Hamilton’s Consultation will focus on patient safety. The Pharmacy Forum NI believes that that best way to protest the public is for pharmacists to push the boundaries of practice and to excel in what we do for our patients. We begun the examination of professional leadership in Northern Ireland, this paper is the first step in this process to determine how professional leadership in Northern Ireland can best meet the needs of the profession.
“We want our members to read this paper and engage with us. We as a profession need to plan and deliver a professional leadership body that will truly lead, promote and support the profession.”
The paper can be downloaded from the Pharmacy Forum NI website and there is also a link to the survey for members to give their views.
