Delphinol:Delphinol is the standardised aqueous extract of berries from the Maqui bush (Aristotelia Chilensis), a shrub native to the Patagonian region of Chile. Maqui berries are a rich source of delphinidins, a specific type of flavonoid anthocyanin. Delphinol is standardised to contain a minimum of 35% total anthocyanins and 25% delphinidins respectively.

In a clinical study, Hidalgo et al (2014) reported the effect of delphinol supplementation on blood glucose levels in a double blind, placebo- controlled, cross-over trial using 10 healthy volunteers with moderate glucose intolerance.

The volunteers fasted for 12 hours, drank a beverage with 200 mg of Delphinol, or a matching placebo, and consumed 75 grams of boiled rice 30 minutes later. The placebo group showed a typical post-prandial sequence, commencing 30 minutes after rice consumption with blood glucose and insulin levels peaking after 60 minutes.

In contrast, the Delphinol group showed significantly lowered post prandial blood glucose and insulin levels compared to placebo. These data indicate that Delphinol supplementation may provide a useful strategy for maintaining healthy blood glucose levels in people with impaired glucose metabolism, particularly since SGLT activity is reportedly increased in Type II diabetes.

Chromium:The role of chromium in the management of blood glucose levels is relatively well established. Chromium is an essential component of chromodulin, a complex also comprising the amino acids glycine, cysteine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid.

Chromodulin in turn plays an important role in insulin signalling, effectively amplifying (up to 8-fold) the interaction of insulin with its cellular receptors, to facilitate glucose removal from the bloodstream.

The absorption of chromium from the digestive is very low, with supplemental chromium in chloride or picolinate forms typically having a bioavailability of 0.5 to 2%.

Adequate chromium intake may be particularly problematic in the elderly (Vaquero et al, 2002). ChromoPrecise ®, a type of chromium yeast with up to ten times the bioavailability of chloride or picolinate forms approved by the European Food standards Authority (EFSA), has been shown in clinical studies to significantly improve fasting plasma glucose and glycated haemoglobin levels in patients with type II diabetes (Racek et al, 2013).
