Welcome W

e begin this issue with the news that the Health and Social Care

Board will go. System level strategic planning and decision making for the bulk of Health and Social Care services will now pass to the Department rather than the Trusts.

Health Minister Simon Hamilton made the announcement stating that the Trusts are to take on extra responsibility, increasing their autonomy and being held more accountable.

The Minister first announced his plans for change in November of last year. Rejecting one of the key recommendations of the Donaldson report, he said he was "categorically ruling out" the report's recommendation that an international panel of experts be appointed to decide on the number of hospitals needed in Northern Ireland.

Instead, he proposed appointing experts from Northern Ireland who work inside the health care system to consider the future configuration of services and then announced his plans to abolish Northern Ireland's Health and Social Care Board. You can read all about the latest news on page 4.

Meanwhile, in other news, the question many community pharmacists will be pondering is, ‘are Alliance Healthcare planning on opening a new distribution site in Northern Ireland?’

Alliance Healthcare has told us in an official statement that they have decided to end their relationship with UniedDrug Sangers amidst implementation of ‘alternative distribution arrangements’.

Many cards are presently being held close, but Pharmacy in Focus will be keeping a close eye on the situation and will keep you abreast of any developments, as and when they occur.

It has been a busy couple of months within the field of diabetes. Northern Ireland is set to enjoy an additional £1.7 million investment in the area to actively support a more ‘innovative approach’ to its treatment and management.

The role of Medicines Use Reviews within diabetes is not to be underestimated and on page 16 we give some more background to assist pharmacists and their teams.

We also cover seasonal hay fever (page 50) and the less well- known issue of infant mental health on page 40.

We hope you enjoy this issue alongside the increasingly better weather.

In the words of Jeanette Walls - “One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by”.
