Winner A

t the start of this year John’s efforts were recognised as he was awarded with the Service

to Pharmacy accolade, sponsored by Bank of Ireland (UK), at the Pharmacy in Focus Awards ceremony in the Ramada Hotel.

John joined Numark from Phoenix, where he worked on the wholesale side of the business, informing and supporting members on their wholesale deals, discounts and deliveries.

He quickly gained an understanding of the industry and his willingness to progress and learn more about how he could support contractors in Northern Ireland naturally saw him gravitate across to the support and guidance that the Numark membership can bring to its members.

“He was very keen to learn more about how he could make a real difference to members’ businesses,” notes one colleague.

This willingness has seen John progress with his knowledge of all aspects of pharmacy, from training and CPD support, insurance and financial matters, retail and over the counter support, to monitored dosage and specials endorsing.

In early 2015 John moved full time over to work as a Numark Pharmacy Development Manager, ensuring the 300-plus members in Northern Ireland maximise their benefits of their membership.

In addition to this, John is able to share his leanings and best practice within the pharmacy community to support members who may need guidance on every aspect of running a community pharmacy.

An example of this would be that in the past two years John has been instrumental in making the launch of the FLU PGD service into the local market a success.

He has promoted this service, encourages members to engage, supported them in engaging with the local communities and been a dummy several times to many a nervous Northern Ireland pharmacist.

This has seen over 100 pharmacists here trained and engaging with a service that three years ago, Numark did not have.

His willingness to embrace the service agenda in this shift left environment has been crucial in getting pharmacists

on board with services and looking at the opportunity open to them both in the short term and longer term through possible public funding.

John’s participation at training events, customer forums and when engaging with members is born out of a willingness to support members with their business.

He is still more than actively involved in the wholesale side of Northern Ireland contractors businesses, being best placed to offer advice and support on the many Numark schemes in place through both of the NI wholesalers, UDS and PHD.

His colleague added, “It has been a great honour to see John’s progression in the past few years and I look forward to this continuing in the future.

“What will remain long after the awards evening in January is that John is a great member of the team and one that we are very proud of.”

John said after winning the Award, “I was very humbled to even be nominated for this and to have won here tonight is a welcome shock.

“It is good to know that there are pharmacists out there who value and appreciate the work that Numark do for them and that it is rightfully received; we do work very hard for our members.

“The Pharmacy in Focus Awards represent a fantastic shout-out for pharmacy. The public don’t sometimes fully understand what their community pharmacy can do for them and so this is great publicity to illustrate what the community pharmacy team can do.”

Gavin Kennedy, Director Business Banking NI said, “We are delighted to sponsor these Awards and in particular this category, as it highlights the important role of pharmacy within the service sector which Bank of Ireland is a part of.

“These Awards present a platform from which to reward and recognise those people that work so hard within this sector and so we are very proud to be here tonight and to present this very well deserved Award to John.” n
