Alex aims to encourage young to get involved
ALEX Coakley is the new youth worker joining the team at Bearsted church. And for the 24-year-old, his first
day in the parishwas, in his words, “a baptism of fire”. First he met youngsters at St
John’s School, Grove Green and the Press, before being whisked off on a whistle-stop tour of the parish. The newly-married recruit is the
fourth full-time youth worker to be appointed in the parish as part of a concerted effort to engage young- sters. He will provide welcome sup-
port to parish priest John Corbyn by taking part in after-school clubs and activities, getting involved with youth groups and working with the younger members of the congregation, aswell as taking part in some services. His talent stems from a degree in

also worked within Christian or- ganisations and says he is looking forward to meeting the needs of youngsters in the area. He said: “Youth work doesn’t
have to be just Christian-based. It could be a youth club or something else that is needed, but whatever it may be, you are working in a Chris- tianway within the community.” Rev Corbyn is particularly pleased towelcome Alex to the fold after managing the youth role him- self across the wider area for some time, owing to vicar vacancies. It has seen him attend up to six as- semblies in five schools a fortnight. He said: “Alex takes up a role
with children and teenagers thatwe see as a high priority. While most young people do tend to move away from Bearsted it has been en- couraging to see how many young people in their 20s from the area continue to be involved in church life as a result of our youth work.” To contact Alex, email alex@holy-
