Ball planned in memory of organ donor son Dan
A FUNDRAISING ball named “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is being organised in memory of Shakespeare-mad actor from Maid- stone to raise awareness of organ donation. Daniel Wiltshire, who died two
years ago aged just 39, was much loved by his many friends aswell as fans of the Changeling Theatre group, which he joined in 1997. He suffered a brain haemorrhage
on Mother’s Day in March 2014, from which he never recovered. Dan carried an organ donor card
and four of his organs were used to help other people. But it was only during his final
hours on life support that his mother Annie, who lives in Bearsted, learned the importance of telling your loved ones your last wishes. MrsWiltshire said: “I discovered
that it’s all verywell being on a reg- ister and carrying a card but if you haven’t discussed it with your next of kin, they can override anything you may havewanted.” MrsWiltshire, a former proprietor
of Harper’s gift and coffee shop in Market Buildings, decided to set up

the DanielWiltshire Foundation in her son’s memory. Afund-raising ball will be held at
the Mercure Great Danes Hotel on Saturday June 25, with a three- course meal, music, dancing and a charity auction. MrsWiltshire said: “Dan’s death
was a massive shock, but we’re so grateful that his organs were do- nated in line with his wishes. “The beneficiaries included a pa-
tientwhohad beenwaiting six years for a transplant.” One of the main reasons there is a shortage of organs for donation is
Annie Wiltshire with daughter Cat and son Daniel
the lack of awareness about the per- missions which are required. Before becoming a professional
actor, Dan – whowas educated at St Francis Roman Catholic School, Maidstone, TunbridgeWells Gram- mar School and Kent Institute of Art and Design – worked with his mother at Harper’s. He was one of the principal play-
ers in the Maidstone-based Changeling Theatre group, which tours the South East performing its own interpretations of Shake- speare’s plays. More than 400 people attended his funeral.
