Classic cars back with vintage fair on Green

THE ninth annual “Classic Cars&RetroVintage” takes place on Bearsted Green on Sunday, July 31.

Praise for

councillors COUNCILLORS are used to deal- ing with brickbats, but it’s not often they get praise. However, Madginford resident

Terence Turner who last year com- plained to the council about the dirty state of the pavement in front of Madginford shops, attended a re- cent meeting to congratulate the council on its newsletter and its conduct. MrTurner told members: “It is an excellent magazine and I just wanted to say how pleased Iwas to receive it.” He added: “I justwanted to say a

small thank you. It’s also nice to see we are no longer back to the de- pressing days when there was al- ways a row.” If anyone else has feedback on the newsletter or ideas for future con- tent, members of the council will be only too pleased to listen. Please get in touch via the clerk at the email address and phone number at the bottom of this page.

Policy update

VISITORS to the council’s annual parish meeting were given a pre- view of the council’s aims and ob- jectives. The council has been busy in re-

cent months updating its policies and, using Maidstone Borough Council as a blueprint, has aimed to identify its strategy and goals going forward and the criteria by which it can be measured as a council. Once finalised, the details will be

available as a download from the parish council website, along with all its other policies, and details will be in the council’s next newsletter.

Road closure

PLANTATION Lane is to be closed for about a week from May 3 for gas and electric supply work. Hog Hill will also be closed for “micro-surfacing” for a few days. The dates are still to be advised.

Up to 200 classic cars will be on display and will raise money for The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. There is free entry for spectators

and the event runs from 10am to 6pm, weather permitting. The ‘Retro Vintage’ theme in-

cludes stalls selling vintage cloth- ing, accessories and jewellery and there will be dancing with the Medway Lindy Hoppers. Refreshments are available in- cluding afternoon tea at The Limes on the Green. It is hoped that the air ambu-

lance will be able to make a low fly-past during the day. For more details of the day, or to

book a place for your vehicle, call Kent Community Events on 01622 630584 or go to www. kentcom- munityevents.co.uk.

Owners will show off their classic cars on Bearsted Green this summer Sponsors for flower planters Concern over

BEARSTED is about to get a whole lot more beautiful. The parish council is looking

for individuals and companies who might be prepared to sponsor one or more floral planters, to be placed around the village. The sponsorship is not so much

about the money, but the willing- ness toweed, water and generally take care of the planter or planters, on an ongoing basis. Wooden planters, measuring1m by 60cm, would be filled with

long-lasting low-maintenance plants to bring a splash of colour to “barren” locations around Bearsted and Madginford. The planters cost £80 and will

be planted by resident Malcolm Withnall, who is a member of the RHS and extremely knowledge- able about plants. Environment committee chair-

man Cllr Geoff Bennett said: “This is a project in which we want to involve the whole com- munity.”

Residents urged to go online

THE parish council is trying to encourage more people to use its web- site and sign up for direct email. In today’s electronic age, email is by far the quickest means of dis- seminating information and the council wants to be able to commu- nicatewith residents when there is important information to send out, or if it needs to seek residents’ views. You can sign up for email via the website, or by sending your details

to the clerk. Parish council chair Fiona Redman said: “We promise not to bom-

bard you or share your email address with external partners.” Details of forthcoming meetings, together with agendas, are posted

on the village noticeboards, so keep your eyes out for details if you wish to attend any of the meetings, which are open to the public.

36 Maidstone East May 2016

illegal fires THE parish council is to keep its nose to the ground for instances of illegal burning around Cross Keys. Maidstone Council gave consent

for one bonfire to burn waste and rubbish deposited in Lilk Meadow – but residents were perturbed to find a second taking place a few weeks later. Peter Schmoeger complained to

the parish council about the activ- ity, which took place when most peoplewere out at work. Mr Schmoeger said many of the elderly residents in the neighbour- hood had been concerned at the smell of acrid smoke, but were afraid to complain in case of reprisals. Cllr Fabienne Hughes had since spoken to Maidstone enforcement officer Louise Duke who said they could only take action if called on site at the time of the incident. In the same area, under pressure

from the council, Golding Homes has said it will install gates at the entrance to the derelict garages so that people cannot access the area to fly tip, now that the rubbish has been cleared away.
