‘Ladee’s’ bid for beauty title

A MAIDSTONE woman who de- scribes herself as more “ladette” than lady has found herself in the semi-finals of the Miss England competition. Karen Sandland (23) has her sus- picions about who nominated her for the competition but says she’s enjoying meeting fellow competi- tors and taking part. The former head girl at Valley

Park School, from Senacre, is a vol- unteer with the Kent Army Cadet Force atBoxley Road and a teaching assistant, most recently at Yalding. She said: “Everyone who knows

meknows I’drather be spending the day up to my ears in mud, that I’m clumsy and love nothing more than being one of the lads. “Instead, I’ve found the girls great

fun and really supportive and what’s even more funny, I’m through to the semi-final.” Karen is one of four Kent girls

who will line up with 50-60 girls at Newark, Nottinghamshire on June 11. They will be competing for the Miss Kent title and a place in the Miss England final in Southport in July, with a £100,000 prize for the winner. The prize for the semi-final is £30,000.

Karen says this would be a life- changing amount for her and part- ner, Carl White, giving them a deposit on a house. The title also comes with a modelling contract. She said: “I will make the most of whatever opportunities come up, but I intend staying in teaching.” Competitors are expected to work

hard to win the heart of judges, who assess contenders not only on their looks but their beauty within. Karen will be hosting charity

events across Maidstone, including cake sales aboard the Kentish Lady and quiz nights to raise money for the competition’s charity as part of her entry submission, and making her gown from recycled material.
