pring has sprung, and here are some tips from Patty Barr—founder and owner of The Elegant Organizer, which services clients from NYC to Montauk—to get your home ready.
Organize closets – Purge the entire closet and create zones/categories of keep, donate and recycle. Once closets are completed, continue with the drawers. This is a great time to switch out seasonal clothing.
Deep-clean carpets and rugs – Barr suggests doing this once a year. While you are on floor level, clean baseboards.
Wash windows inside and out – Wipe down the sills and clean all edges of the rooms.
Reorganize bookshelves – Sort books by size and even subject. Remove books that you have read or you think you will never read and donate them to a local school or recre- ation center.
Clean the blades of ceiling fans – Barr recommends using one-part water and one-part rubbing alcohol.
Don’t forget about your furry friends – Clean dog and cat bowls with water and vinegar.
Clean inside the refrigerator – Clean with a combina- tion of sea salt and club soda.
Organize the pantry and throw out any expired
foods – Donate foods that have not expired but you know you just won’t consume to a local shelter or church.
Remove hard-water stains and mildew on walls, drains and showerheads – Soak them in vinegar and water.
Annual purge of children’s artwork – Either store the items in creative ways, donate to organizations that recycle artwork into greeting cards or throw some of it away.
