Fury at garden homes scheme

RESIDENTS in Loose are object- ing to a proposal to replace a large Edwardian house with seven four- and five-bedroom homes. Paul Fowler wants to demolish 466 Loose Road and buy land from the two neighbouring properties to develop a plot for seven houses which, it is claimed, would over- shadow bungalows in nearby Skye Close and Anglesey Avenue. The North Loose Residents Asso- ciation says the proposal is a “back garden development” and goes against the neighbourhood plan and Maidstone Council’s policies. There is currently room for eight cars at No 466 but the proposed de- velopment would accommodate 21 vehicles and 28 bicycles. However, this is not enough for the size of the development, ac- cording to the NLRA, which argues there is no provision for on-street or visitor parking, which will lead to overspill parking in nearby streets. The association says the scheme is too dense and will have a negative impact on neighbouring properties. The landowner would buy part of neighbouring gardens and de- molish the Edwardian house to cre-

ate a 0.38-acre site, on which he would build the seven luxury homes.

Residents in Skye Close and An-

glesey Avenue say they would lose outlook, light and privacy while- Berenice Pretlove, whose home faces the proposed development, said: “I cannot comprehend why the council would allow the demo- lition of such a beautiful character property in favour of characterless properties.”

The NLRA believes the recent re- fusal of planning permission for a site at New Line Learning Acad- emy on Boughton Lane, by the Sec- retary of State on grounds of traffic congestion, has a bearing on this application.

“That decision was partly based on traffic congestion at the A229 Loose Road/ Boughton Lane/Crip- ple Street junction, which lies less than 200m north of the proposed road access for this application,” said chairman Sean Carter. This will add to the severe congestion currently experienced along this section of the Loose Road.” The matter will be decided by Maidstone’s planning committee.

News Walk to thank charity

THE public are invited to join a walk around Mote Park in Maidstone in aid of a charity that has helped to transform the life of this little girl and her family. Aaron Butcher (33) and Natalie Bruce (30) came up with the idea of the walk to celebrate The Cleft Lip and Palate Association’s (CLAPA) awareness week. Their daughter Olivia (right) was born with a cleft lip and palate – a condition affecting more than 1,000 babies each year in the UK – which presented problems with her eating and hearing. The charity provided the young

family, who live off the Sutton Road in Maidstone, with support, advice and special feeding bottles as well as a link to other parents facing the same problems. Natalie said: “Having the resource of the CLAPA website really helped us get our heads around the news we had been given at our 20-week scan. “We were able to see before and

after photos of other children with clefts and this set our minds at rest. “We knew we had a hard journey

ahead of us, but knew we had great support along the way.” Since then, Olivia – now two – has had two operations to repair the gaps in her lip and palate. The charity, which aims to pro- vide lifelong support for affected children and their families, will ben- efit from the proceeds of the scenic 1.5-mile walk around the lake, which starts at 1pm on Saturday, May 7.
