It’s election time - how to cast your vote on Thursday 5 May
Maidstone goes to the polls on Thursday 5 May when residents will have the chance to cast their vote in up to three separate elections.
Elections for Maidstone Borough Council, some local Parish Councils, and Kent’s Police and Crime Commissioner all take place that day.
Depending where you live, you may be voting in one, two or all three of these elections.
Council elections
There will be elections contested in 19 of Maidstone borough’s 26 wards, and in two parishes. The poll card recently sent to your address will tell you whether there are borough and parish elections in your area.
These elections use the traditional “first past the post” method. For Maidstone Borough Council you can only vote for one candidate. With Parish Councils, the number of candidates you can vote for may vary, depending where you live.
Kent’s Police and Crime Commissioner election
Everyone will vote in the elections for Kent’s Police and Crime Commissioner. A different voting system is used - you can vote for a first and second choice of who you want to win.

The ballot paper will list all the candidates. Next to the list there will be two columns. You will be asked to:

Promote your event If you’re running an event in the borough you can promote if for free on
www.visitmaidstone.com. Select the ‘What’s On’ tab and click on ‘Add Your Event’.
• vote for your first choice candidate by marking a cross (X) in the first choice column, and
• vote for your second choice candidate by marking a cross (X) in the second choice column.
Full instructions will be available on the day or will have been sent to you if you have a postal vote.
The polls will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 5 May. The count will take place, and the results announced, the following day.
