downsmail.co.uk Drunk swung at lierwarden

MAIDSTONE Council has said it will not tolerate any of its officers being threatened or attacked, fol- lowing an incident in the town in which a litterwardenwasswungat. Police were called after the man

tried to land several blows on the of- ficer who had approached him out- side McDonalds for urinating in Week Street. An eyewitness said: “He was doing a splendid job dealing with a

man who had exposed himself pub- licly whilst urinating in full view of everyone against the phone box. “The enforcement guy tried speaking to the man, but instead ended up being shoved and smacked. Itwas apparent by cans of drink under the bench that the bloke had been drinking and then became violent quickly. “Despite the fact that these guys issue stupidly high fines for a fag

being dropped, this guy deserved being enforced on, just a shame the enforcement guy got attacked whilst dealing with him.” A spokesman for Maidstone Council confirmed the incident had been caught onCCTVcameras and a manwas arrested. The offender had hit out at the enforcement officers after exposing himself but none of the punches connected. The spokesman added: “This in-

toxicated man was urinating in full view of the public. When our litter enforcement officer intervened he was pushed and a number of puncheswere thrown at him. Luck- ily, none of them made contact and hewas not injured. “However, we will not tolerate

any council officer being threatened or attacked while carrying out their duties and we will support any ac- tion taken by Kent Police.”

Oliver’s on his way

MAIDSTONE’S Oliver Lawrence has his sights on title glory after a career-best performance this month. The 23-year-old roofer produced a mesmerising dis-

play for a sell-out crowd, which included 50 of his friends, to beat former professional champion Paul Morby at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey. The young star, pictured on the left, says having

turned his back on his partying lifestyle he feels ready to now take on the elite operators in the Queensbury Box- ing League. He said: “I’ve been training with a great team at

Camberley Boxing Club, but for this fight Imoved back home and I’ve been training at Maidstone Boxing Club – the perfect place forme to keep learning and to reach my goals. I’d now love to fight for the league’s national title against Terry Russell or even one day the British title.” Picture by SamanthaWordie.
