Food store part of homes scheme

RESIDENTS in Maidstone are to get a new superstore as part of the 600-home scheme in Langley Park. Supermarket giant Aldi hopes to

open a 1,254sqm store towards the end of next year, creating 40 jobs. The park, off Sutton Road, will

also feature a Toby Carvery and several smaller retail units. Commercial property and plan-

ning consultant Rapleys has been instructed to seek interest for the five retail units, which range in size from 72sqm to 400sqm and are available individually or as one package. The shops will not only serve the incoming residents of Langley Park, but also those moving in to nearby developments being built by Countryside Properties and Barratts. Detailed planning consent was

granted in March this year for a food store, family pub and the five retail units. Josh Tyler, senior surveyor at Rapleys, said: “We have received strong interest to date and invite further interest. We envisage that the centre will comprise a variety of uses including retail, takeaway and leisure, which will really add value to the local area.” Aldi’s Maidstone store, in Well

Road, opened in 2011. A second store is due to open off Hermitage Lane in Aylesford later this year. Aspokesperson for the company

said: “Now that planning consent has been granted at Langley Park, we are working with the developer on the construction plans. We look forward to making it easy for local residents to shop and save closer to home.”

Family fun at country fair

KENT Life Heritage Farm Park celebrates the county’s farming traditions at its annual country fair in June – with a chance to feed animals, climb aboard a tractor or join a sheep dog demonstration. There will also

be a falconry display, a tour around the vin- tage farmhouse and the chance to watch a blacksmith at work in his forge. Kent Life is set

in 28 acres of gardens, or- chards and has one of the last hand-picked hop gardens in the country. Visitors can ramble along

the

wildlife discovery trail; and see Britain’s last working coal-fired oast house. The attraction in Sandling is also a working farm so there are plenty of animals to see, including pigs, sheep, ducks, goats, alpacas, horses and ponies.

Dogs to have their day at show

AFUNDog Show is being staged in Maidstone to raise money for the Heart of Kent Hospice in Aylesford. There will be 48 classes for pedigree and novelty breeds, as well as

those testing obedience and handling, offering spectators plenty to watch. There will also be stalls selling crafts and food. The event at Market Hall Place, Lockmeadow, on Sunday, June 19,

is being sponsored by Aiden’s Labradors, with prizes for each cate- gory. Classes cost £1.50 to enter, with registration from 9.30am on- wards. The show starts at 10.30am. Spectators will be invited to give a donation on entry. Those interested in running a stall should email rebecca.beard@hokh.co.uk for details.
