morning rain subsided, and then went straight to the bench that overlooked the evenly spaced assem- blage of buoys David had spotted, a white polka dot pattern on the dark slate- gray water. We stopped for lunch at the restau- rant, and then, because David had yet another idea for a photo, we set off inland from the cove, along one of the three dirt roads, toward a point at the end of harbor #2 in the distance.

We were an hour

out when it began to rain again, just a light drizzle. David took pictures of the scenery, and I took pictures of David. All the desert blooms were made more vivid against the backdrop of the dark lavender sky: the lemon yellows fluoresced, the purples and periwinkles

popped. We reached the end of a cliff and gazed down upon turquoise water as clear as glass. “I think a few of these might just turn out,” David said, looking down at his camera.

“That’s great if they do,” I said. “But we should probably come back here soon, so you can get the one you wanted, the one with the stars. And that way, we have a reason to come back here soon.” I tried to wipe the small raindrops from my glasses and then laughed at the futility. “How ’bout we skip the restaurant tonight and make our way back to the room for hummus, wine, and...you know.” David flashed his dimples. “Yeah. We really should come here more often,” he said as he quickly packed up his camera.

The Rocky Horror Show Hey, don’t dream it. Go be it at Cygnet Theatre. Frank N Furter, the “sweet transvestite from Transsexual Tran- sylvania,” invites you to one of his affairs — and “maybe a bite” — on a dark and stormy night. Cygnet’s giv- ing the cult movie a live, infectious, and mad-dash production. Director Sean Murray stars as Frank, with a commanding presence and fluid gender flexibility. But this is truly an ensemble show. There are no weak links, anywhere, and many voices are stronger than the original. The show encourages audience participation. You can even puchase a kit. But the theater cautions buyers: “Please see a doctor if your props last longer than

four hours.” Critic’s Pick. CYGNET THEATRE, 4040 TWIGGS ST., OLD TOWN. 619-337-1525. 7:30PM THURSDAYS, 7PM FRIDAYS, 10PM FRIDAYS, 3PM SATURDAYS, 8PM SATUR- DAYS, 2PM SUNDAYS, 7PM SUNDAYS, 7:30PM WEDNESDAYS, THROUGH MAY 7.

Skin Deep Playwright Joe Lonoff mines all the comedy he can out of an awkward blind date. The Scripps Ranch pro- duction boasts some fine actors. Brenda Adelman, as Maureen, is a superb comedienne and gives a highly believable performance. Dan- iel Gurian makes Joe a regular guy who can be hilarious one minute and touching the next. But I don’t

know if there’s enough comedy to sustain a whole evening’s entertain- ment. If laughs are what you want, then this breezy, skin deep piece of theater may suffice. Worth a try.
