too sharp if you’re planning to use this argument – it also helps to talk fast, so practice this before you use it).

5. Slower speeds burn less fuel – remember it’s the journey not the destination.

6. Turn off the generators when you don’t need them and use dockside power whenever possible.

7. Turn off your engine at the dock to reduce idling – there’s no point in burning gas and going nowhere.

8. Keep your engine tuned up.

9. Keep your hull clean – the hitchhik- ing green gunk growing out there is a real drag – in more ways than one.

10. Use your trim tabs properly to reduce drag – especially when you’re getting up to planning speed. And afterwards, as an unbalanced boat uses more gas.

11. Go light – no, not the beer. You don’t always need full tanks – water weighs 1 kg/litre, gasoline weighs .76 kg/l. If you’re going out for a day you don’t need full water tanks. If you’re gas tank holds 200 litres, keeping at a half tank will save 76 kg or roughly 160 lbs.

12. Keep the bow light – a bow heavy boat pushes more water. I’m not talk- ing about the chubby guy up front – just keep anchors, spare prop and tools in the back and your towels, ropes etc. up front.

For all your boating needs.
