Even boaters with money to burn (most often a pre-requisite) look for ways not to waste fuel. Here’s the top ways to boost the nautical miles you get with every tank. Some apply to all boats and some are more applicable to house- boats.


1. Go topless. Your bimini acts like a parachute so keep it in the ‘trailering’ position whenever you don’t need it up.


2. Have a plan so you know exactly where you are going. Save yourself the time of driving back and forth. The charts in this guide are an excellent resource.


3. Check your prop. If it’s dinged or bent it can cost you an extra 10% in fuel. Make sure you have the best

prop. If you are constantly at wide open throttle (WOT) you’re burn- ing more fuel than you need to and a higher end prop typically delivers more ‘bite’ making your engine more efficient.


4. Begin with a large enough engine. A 250 hp engine running at half throttle is much more fuel-efficient than 150 hp at wide open throttle (WOT) – this is where saving money at the point of purchase, actually costs more money. My father-in-law has had his boat for 25 years. A larger engine could have saved him $300/year in gas - that’s $7500.
