Cygnet Theatre’s Artistic Director Sean Murray, nabbed the royalties for Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, just as the musical reached its 40th anniversary milestone. Who would have guessed this campy, frolicking science fiction, B-grade parody would have such staying power? From the steps of the church to the steps of “The Time Warp,” this delightfully naughty play continues to keep us well entertained.
The plotline is astounding and shall we say...
it has a carnal arc? The show opens at a wedding where two virgins, Brad and Janet, declare their love and then drive off into the woods. Enter bad weather. While seeking shelter from the storm, they find a castle. Step aside 50 Shades of Grey and meet the erotic, cross-dressing, mad scientist Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter. With the help of bizarre sci-fi characters, Brad and Janet embark on a wild, unforgettable romp of pleasure, self-discovery, and rock and roll. This show is adored for tunes like “Time Warp,” “Science Fiction Double Feature,” “Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me” and “Sweet Transvestite.” At the Cygnet, Murray is having a ball as the much-loved Dr. Frank ‘N’ Furter. The Rage Monthly caught up with Murray early one morning, before he donned his corset, rolled on the fishnet stockings and hit the stage for rehearsals.
Wearing your Cygnet Theatre artistic director’s hat, what made you select Rocky Horror Show for this season? I have a long history and love of
this show. I had wanted to include it in a very early Cygnet season but discovered that particular year was a Rocky anniversary and that the professional rights were being held in hopes for a national tour. The tour never materialized. When I got to it again, I discovered that the Old Globe had the rights

and were including it in their season, which put us off one more time. The third time was a charm and we received permission to produce it. The show is a
