INDUSTRY NEWS Waste management event… Diary of events W

hat is considered to be Europe’s premier event for resource efficiency

and waste management solu- tions, RWM will take place at the UK’s National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from 13-15 Septem- ber. Organised in partnership with the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), it spans each element of the industry and is shaped around the demands of this

rapidly growing sector.

The show attracts more than 700 brands and 13,000 visitors. It en- courages innovation by promoting achievable strategies, presenting case studies and providing quality networking opportunities. Visitors can also enter three co-located events with their badge. These are: The Energy Event, Eu- rope’s leading and most compre- hensive energy procurement and management show with more than

...and concern over FPP guidance

In connection with waste man- agement, it is interesting to learn that the latest Fire Prevention Plan (FPP) guidance issued by the UK Environment Agency (EA) has caused concern for many opera- tors in the waste industry, who fear it could have a detrimental impact on businesses that store large volumes.

The guidance outlines a number of proposed changes to the stor- age of combustible materials on sites. It was issued in March, 2015, and a consultation period, which opened last November, closed in February.

The Wood Recyclers Associa- tion (WRA), one of the organisa- tions campaigning against the FPP proposals, supported its members to help them understand the guid- ance and the potential impact it could have.

The trade body, which repre- sents 80% of wood recyclers in the UK, extensively reviewed the FPP guidance and highlighted a number of key issues with it, including: a three-four hour pro- posed burn time, which the WRA says has no scientific backing and which it believes is an unreason- able target because it doesn’t take

into account individual circum- stances; the rotation of waste wood stock on a three-six month basis, which it says the EA has no scientific evidence to support; the reduction in stockpile sizes for in- ternal and external stacks, which it believes will make many businesses unviable; and the inability to devi- ate from the minimum standards outlined in the FPP, which it says is unreasonable when operators are willing to implement additional safety and security measures. Andy Hill, Chair of the WRA, said: “The WRA is committed to safety, professionalism and protecting the environment and we agree fundamentally that operators should have Fire Preven-

We are the first waste stream to hold fire tests to help inform this process and we have helped and encouraged that process and are now awaiting the results. “We are concerned that both the EA’s FPP guidance and the consultation were issued prior to the results of any fire tests being known, when those results will undoubtedly help to determine some of the answers to these questions.”
