WOOD FUEL MATERIALS INDUSTRY NEWS

In response to the growing importance of woodfuel as a source of renewable energy, PEFC is increasingly working to strengthen the link between sustainable biomass and forest certification. It feels that the expansion of PEFC-certified forest cover in the UK would result in better managed woodlands and an improved supply of certified material to a ready-made and growing market. Having more certified woodlands will also ensure that forest owners can access markets that are keen to procure certified raw materials.

Alun Watkins, Executive Director, PEFC UK Ltd.

system aims to provide: • A cost-effective solution designed to assist small and medium-sized private forest owners to become certified and demonstrate compliance.

• An aid to Group Certification Managers to enable them to

function more efficiently and reduce costs.

• A user-friendly means of assessing the compatibility of existing forest management requirements with those needed by UKWAS.

• Improved consistency of internal

audits via online checklists and the use of a bespoke App for smartphones and tablets.

• A larger PEFC-certified forest area, which can deliver a greater supply of material to both primary processors and end-users.

To find out more about how PEFC and the online certification system can help owners of smaller woodlands, PEFC has published PEFC Sustainable Forest Management – an Online Certification System for UK Woodland Owners.
