SONOMA COUNTY, CA. ~ Dancer, chore- ographer and Profes- sor Emeritus, Nancy Lyons enthusiastically explains,

“I still love

working. I love mak- ing dance. I love dance. I love working with young people.” Lyons was asked to join SoCo Dance Teater three years ago. She taught dance for more than 40 years at Sonoma State University where she also spent time as the Director of

the Dance

Program. Her training was in

classical modern dance, a style that emerged in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Lyons explains that modern dance has “evolved enormously to embrace more ethnic forms and bring in other styles of move- ment; which has now been coined contemporary

dance, which is what is happen- ing now.” SoCo Dance Teater is a multi-generational, pro- fessional-based company cur- rently comprised of six active members, whose mission, “is dedicated to the creation and promotion of dynamic and en- gaging contemporary dance in Sonoma County.” Lyons’ premiere of Up Against

and Off the Wall is one of the featured pieces in the SoCo Dance Teatre Concert 2016.

She played with two-dimen- sional space when choreo- graphing this piece, by plac- ing the dancers close to or “against” the wall. Lyons describes a randomness to this particular

piece

whereby the danc- ers pull a number right before the performance begins which determines what individual dancer will stay be-

hind, contained within caution tape that is used to delineate the space as the dancers move,

“off” the wall. Te other SoCo Dance Teater choreographer’s are presenting innovative piec- es entitled as follows: *Te six minute solo, *So far, so close, *Bare Bones, *Salsa, *I can see everything from here, *Change of State, and *Tis Way Up. SoCo Dance Teater and SSU

Te Sunday perfor-

mance includes a “talk back” or interactive educational component that gives the audience an in-depth look into the creative process of the dances. Lyons is also a world-traveler who has intentionally sought out dance wher- ever she travels, “in many cultures, dance is just a natural part of life and everyone dances, it doesn’t matter what the age or the body type, in other cultures dance is oſten community-

based” Lyons reflects, “it brings community together, rather than separates.”
