If you ‘re planting more unusu- al seeds this year ‘Rebel Rebel’. . .try some interesting choices you haven’t grown before. Ex- plore the Seed Bank in Peta- luma inside the old, historic bank building. Te hardest part is deciding what to plant; ask yourself what’s for dinner? Seeds you can plant directly in the garden now are Swiss chard, bok choy, arugula, spinach, rad- ishes, turnips, carrots to name a few. Tere are hundreds of varieties; heirloom, extra fla- vorful, striped, ribbed, disease resistant varieties to grow and new seeds for this year . . .NO GMO. ‘It Ain’t Easy’ but you can find

some sort of seed storage box, with a top! Get creative . . . get organized and get the kids in- volved in this project so they will want to assemble their very own seed box! Little ‘green houses’ can be made from re- purposed square and rectangle salad boxes by punching sever- al holes in the top for adequate ventilation.

Fill them with an

inch of gravel that will allow them to drain. Ten top it off with excel-

lent potting soil and plant your seeds the recommended depth. Growing seeds want bright light but not intense direct sun. Slowly increase their sunlight as they come up and have their first few leaves. Keep an eye on these babies! We are woven into all things

and all are woven into us. Re- joice and breathe deep with the changing Earth. Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket and never let it fade away. . .

Happy Valentine’s Day! Just Fine The Way You Are By Jean Wong ~ lijeanwong.blogspot.com

Kenwood, CA. ~ It’s taken me the longest time to realize that when people ask me how I am, I’m really expected to say, “fine,” or, “great,” and then ask them how they are do- ing. It’s not quite the done thing to tell them how I really feel— the

big fight I

just had with my husband, my last root canal, or the recitation of my chronic anxieties and woes. My tongue is not forked but

it does waggle and blurt when activated, happily gushing forth at a moment’s notice. It doesn’t matter what the subject is; I have an opinion about every- thing. Although I know nothing about physics, if someone were to ask me to teach a course, I would stand at the podium and hold forth, confident that not matter how uninformed, something will come out of my mouth. Is there a fly trap in my

head that attracts ideas so they must circle around and enter my brain triggering words to pop out? Sometimes what I say is normal, but more oſten than not, my com- ments may be complete non sequiturs, some- thing inappro- priate, or bor- derline insulting. Now in my (hopefully!)

mature years,

I have learned to control the little release button. I have a greater sensitivity as to whom I am talking to. Is it my dearest friend who completely under- stands me, a complete stranger, or a venomous gossiper. A flat- terer or sycophant I may never be, but instead of words ignit- ing in any wayward direction, I

try to direct my responses

steadily, calmly, inoffensively, and hope that in the long run I don’t sit there and bore every- one to death.

Double Decker Lanes Canned Food Drive Proves to be

a Great Success! From Curtis of D& D Lanes

Rohnert Park, CA. ~ Te Canned Food Drive has been a huge success for Double Deck- er Lanes for the four years we have been doing it. Each year from November 1st-January 31st we give our customers a free game of bowling for bring- ing a can of food in to donate to the Redwood Empire Food Bank. We’ve typically filled about 8 food bins each year but this year we decided that we needed to step up our efforts so by making this fundraiser our top priority for our front desk staff, we are proud to say that we have filled 19 BINS!!! It’s a win/win...we save our

customers money and we get to give back to our community!
