A Day in the Life
THE OXLEY’S OF DOVERCOURT OWNER RUNS US THROUGH HIS AVERAGE DAY AS A DELI OWNER.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY AT OXLEY’S
DELICATESSEN LIKE FOR YOU? l The day always starts early with making the cheese and fruit scones for the coffee shop. These are baked each morning as well as any of our range of home-made cakes before we open. As we have a coffee shop upstairs and serve at tables on the ground floor too there can be quite a buzz in both the main shop and as we serve upstairs. It’s great to smell the coffee and hear people’s laughter and conversation as they shop or relax.
DESCRIBE THE FAVOURITE PART
OF YOUR WORKING DAY? l We are approaching our 5th anniversary in the High Street and we enjoy all parts of our day. We set out to provide a personal friendly service and bring back how the shopping experience used to be, less frantic and with a smile. The interaction with our customers is most certainly our favourite part.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS THE
BIGGEST CHORE? l We work within strict hygiene processes and our five-star
26 The Delicatessen Magazine
Environmental Health Rating requires us to make sure all our processes are documented and maintained. So there are some repetitive chores. Cleaning up after a busy day can be quite a task!
WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE
PRIORITY DURING THE DAY? l Our number one priority is to ensure the customer is looked after from the time they come into the shop to the time they leave. Always to be greeted and given the best of attention at all times.
OUTSIDE OF RUNNING YOUR DELICATESSEN HOW DO YOU LIKE
TO SPEND YOUR FREE TIME? l We have three grandchildren and we try and spend as much time as we can with them. We both enjoy our garden when we have the time! We enjoy the theatre and cinema and spending time with our friends, just relaxing. l
