Do You Have a Damaged Metabolism? Learn the Answers in postgraduate courses in Nutrition and Exercise at University of Bridgeport

ow many times have we made the recommendation to our clients that to stay healthy they should optimize their diet and exercise regularly? We get this message from all corners, the media, healthcare practi- tioners, friends and family. For a large percentage of Americans, this is too vague to put into action and for many

H

practitioners, they are not well equipped to deliver specifi c custom- ized recommendations.

The type and volume of nutrition varies by individual as does the type of exercise that will be constructive versus destructive. Should everyone do a spin class for aerobic fi tness? Should everyone do CrossFit or heavy weight training? The answer is an unequivocal no.

So how do we translate that generic recommendation into meaningful action? The most important strategy is to understand the interaction of nutritional status with ability to achieve fi tness and overlay that onto the client’s unique lifestyle.

Metabolism is what controls how powerful our internal engine is. It is responsible for our overall energy, weight management, resistance to disease, and mental function. Due to the changes in our food supply and fast paced lifestyles that have occurred in the last 20 years, many are going through each day with a damaged metabolism. This can result in issues such as inability to maintain a healthy body composition, suboptimal or poor physical perfor- mance in sports, sleep issues, reproductive issues, mood issues and as it progresses, more serious chronic and debilitating diseases, such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

UB offers unique post graduate education designed to help the healthcare professional understand and navigate this terrain to produce a higher quality treatment plan for individuals.

There are health professionals who may be well versed in nutri-

tion, or exercise physiology, but there are a smaller percentage who truly have expertise in combining the two. Those who are best posi- tioned are those educated in integrative individualized therapies.

The New Year is a great time to take stock in your current position and develop a plan of action which will yield the best and fastest improvements for your clients. See our ad on page 5 for a post grad- uate course on Nutrition and Exercise at the University of Bridgeport designed for healthcare professionals to optimize their knowledge to help clients create the correct synergy between their food choices and their activity plan.
