SANTA ROSA. What do the
words plucky, chipper and mer- ry give us for 2016? ~ A spir- ited approach to our new year, and an apt description of Paul Andrew Doyle, our decidedly upbeat publisher. His energet- ic, ambitious optimism and zest for life is impressive. --Not to mention his humble, good-na- tured generosity towards com- munity. I was delighted when Paul agreed to a personal Mar- cia-style InnerView to explore being “upbeat.” To prep, I re- read some back issues of Paul’s “Verbal Commute” column. His

First Fun Facts
In 1782 in France, Joseph Michel Montgolfi er fi lled a silk bag with hot air which, being less dense than the air around it, lifted the bag to the high ceil- ing of his house. On April 25, 1783, Joseph and his brother Jacques Etienne built a larger, spherical bag, fi lled it with hot air from a fi re and sent several farm animals aloft in a basket hung beneath
it.After this success, they created an even larger envelope, and on November 21, 1783 in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris the brothers launched a 70-foot high balloon carrying Jean Francois Piltre de Rozier and the Marquis d’Artandes.
First Humor
Two children went into their parent’s bathroom and noticed the scale in the cor- ner. “Whatever you do,” cautioned one child to the younger one, “don’t step on it!”
“Why not?” asked the sibling. “Because every time mom does, she lets out an awful scream!”
