Hybrid IS the way to go
Sensible drivers are ditching diesels – now that we know them to be environmentally unfriendly, writes David Murray
If you want low CO2 emissions and lots and lots of miles to the gallon, plus you want any tax incentive that’s out there, you are better off taking the hybrid route – a mash-up between petrol engine and electric motor.
A hybrid is definitely the way to go for company executives who want to do their bit for the planet and be seen to be green, and who want performance and practicality thrown into the mix.
Enter the Lexus IS 300h, the latest version of which is out now. I tried the Sport model and when I wasn’t marvelling at all the features that come as
standard on this car, for an on- the-road price of under £30k, I was enjoying myself discovering what fun it is to drive on the open road.
Who needs a diesel when this car can do over 60 mpg? With a choice of Eco, Normal or Sport mode, you can choose how you want to balance frugality against performance. Choose Eco if you really want to eke out the fuel, choose Sport if you want a bit more responsiveness, or just keep it in Normal to suit most road conditions and achieve the right degree of power, economy and ride comfort.
Standard spec includes heated seats and the navigation system, stylish 18-inch black alloys, parking assist (front and rear), cruise control, smart entry key system, and so much more.
I particularly liked the driving position, comfortable seats and information displays. You would expect premium quality from Lexus of course, but you also have here a well-designed and thought-through interior. Everything just works.
And that makes the IS a competitor to the BMW 3-Series and the other German makes that dominate in the executive
car rankings. There’s now an argument for shelving that diesel purchase and saving yourself company car tax, fuel costs and more by going the hybrid route with Lexus.
If you do, you will not be disappointed by the levels of refinement, and although you might have a lower top speed to play with than on a BMW, in reality how many times would you seriously be looking to drive at 150mph…?
