EY celebrates entrepreneurial success
EY is proud to work with entrepreneurial and fast-growing businesses. Each year EY celebrates the successes of entrepreneurs both globally and in the UK as part of the Entrepreneur Of The Year awards programme. Now in its 29th year globally and 17th year in the UK, these awards celebrate the achievements of entrepreneurs and recognise the exceptional. EY’s Entrepreneur Of The Year programme is present in more than 145 cities, in over 60 countries across the world – making it the world’s most prestigious business award, writes Dave Hales of EY
An independent judging panel selected winners from 35 UK finalists in all, who have combined revenues of £3.5 billion and employ a workforce of over 300,000, but ultimately we are delighted that it was healthcare innovator Richard Steeves, who was crowned EY Entrepreneur Of The Year UK 2015 overall winner.
Establishing Synergy in 1991, Steeves identified a gap in the market and introduced surgical packs to reduce the rate of HIV infection in operating theatres. Headquartered in Swindon, the company now processes more than 150 million reusable medical and surgical instruments a year and makes daily deliveries of sterile reusable gowns, towels and set up packs.
Steeves’ entrepreneurial journey started when he was just 16. He set up three business ventures to fund his way through higher education; one had notable success – a board game that was stocked in a UK department store.
Dave Hales, EY’s Entrepreneur Of The Year programme leader for the south, said: “Steeves has taken Synergy from start-up to stock exchange, providing mission critical services to the healthcare industry, to help safeguard patients by reducing the risk of post-operative infections.
“The judges described Steeves as a true master entrepreneur. His perseverance to find a better way, strong financial performance, innovative approach and clear strategic direction really impressed the judges, as did the commitment he has shown to making our health service more efficient and doing so in an environmentally sustainable way.”
Our congratulations go to all our regional finalists and winners; and in particular to Steeves who will now go on to represent the UK at EY's World Entrepreneur Of The Year awards in Monaco next June to compete with more than 60 other country winners for the global title.
Dave Hales concluded: “UK entrepreneurs are an optimistic bunch – 53% of UK entrepreneurs forecast profits growth of greater than 10% in the next three years and a fifth are looking to

create more than 50 new jobs, according to EY’s recent Entrepreneurs Survey.
“Driving innovation, creativity and confidence in the market and ultimately creating jobs, wealth and prosperity; it is only right we applaud them for their achievements.”

EY's Entrepreneur Of The Year programme is just one of the ways in which the firm recognises and supports fast-growing entrepreneurial businesses. Also in October we hosted our Fast Growth Network dinner at The Vineyard in Newbury.
Aimed at bringing together the leaders of fast-growing businesses in the Thames Valley and Solent regions we were joined by ‘The Corporate Philosopher’, Professor Roger Steare. He is a leading practitioner in the development and delivery of leadership, culture and ethics programmes for global organisations. He helps people in organisations all over the world develop good thinking and then do the right thing.
Maybe five years ago a culture of corporate integrity would be viewed as “nice to have” but neither essential, nor a boardroom priority. Since then the world has changed, and with it people’s attitudes. The breakdowns in trust, not just in individual organisations but sometimes entire business sectors, have been profound and lasting. Commenting on the changing environment, Steare observed, “Businesses urgently need not just to rebuild trust but to take it to another level. Stakeholders, including employees and customers alike now have much higher expectations of the integrity of their employers and suppliers.
These expectations continue to grow as more and more people experience the benefits of dealing with organisations that get integrity right. Although the consequences of failure can be devastating, the positive message is that getting this right delivers benefits across your business. Ultimately this is about the choices people make.”

Gareth Anderson, EY sponsoring partner for the event commented: “We’re now into the third year of hosting our Fast Growth Network dinners at The Vineyard and are delighted by how the network is developing. Of course it helps to have a fantastic venue and speakers of the calibre of Steare. We’re grateful for the way in which Steare stimulated the discussion throughout the evening.”
