Hi All! This month, I would like to feature a trio of “veteran” musicians who have recently got together and formed a Rock ‘N Roll band … ‘The Hot Rods’.

This newly created musical

project

consists of: Dave Diggle on Drums, Mark on Lead / Rhythm guitar and Bill ‘O Brien on Bass Guitar. Dave, who hails from Jersey in the Channel Islands, came up with the

idea of putting together a Rock ‘N Roll band to cater for the ever increasing demand in the area (especially, during the winter months) of afternoon entertainment for those that like to dance. Dave has lived in Spain for many years and was a former member of “Rufus Stone” Band. He is a fine drummer, with a keen interest in Jazz Fusion (Just in case there are any Jazz Fusionists around.........sorry Dave - I couldn’t resist that one!!!). Apart from his musical interests,

he operates a Financial Services Advice Company, and is an Accountant by profession. Mark is also very well known in the area as half of Sunflower Valley Duo, along with his charming wife Carla. Mark and Carla are well established entertainers on the local music circuit, and are also owners of the “Madhouse” Venue on the Orihuela Costa. They recently hosted a very successful production of the Rocky Horror Show at their establishment. Bill ‘O Brien is also an extremely well known face on the local circuit. Bill hails from Cork in Ireland, and has lived here on the South Costa Blanca for over 12 years. Since living in Spain, he has been working in various musical combos, and also performs as a solo artist. Most of us Musicians (of a certain age) nearly always, when asked of their early influences and inspiration to pursue a career in music, automatically say either Buddy Holly, or Chuck Berry (sometimes both). Well, back in the 1970s, Bill ‘O Brien shared the stage with the latter of the two...........the iconic Chuck Berry!! Bill was based in London at the time, and he and his band were asked to back Chuck on his upcoming U.K. and European tour. Chuck Berry had flown over for these events, but didn’t bring his band over with him. This was quite commonplace with American Artistes back then - the musician’s union insisted on British Musicians being used, and obviously, it was more cost effective than bringing many more instrumentalists over. If you like Rock ‘N Roll music, either to jive to, or just listen, The Hot Rods perform all the classic songs associated with this genre of music at The Club, Ciudad Quesada on the 26th November and the 4th December, from 4pm - 6pm. Alternate Thursday’s will soon be starting at The Madhouse ....see local press for details.

Bye for now, D.P.
