Page 2 What is attendance allowance and who can claim?
Attendance Allowance is a benefit paid to help with personal care if you have physical or mental health difficulties.
As we get older many of us need a little extra help to look after ourselves especially if we have a long term illness or disability.
If you find yourself frequently experiencing difficulty or pain when doing everyday activities such as getting in and out of bed, washing, dressing or moving around then Attendance Allowance may be appropriate for you. Or perhaps you require supervision to keep you safe due to sight, hearing or mental health issues such as dementia.
Attendance Allowance is paid at 2 different rates, you could get £55.10 or £82.30 per week depending on the level of care or supervision you need. This benefit can be claimed if you lived and worked in the UK before your retirement. You must be over 65 years of age and have suffered difficulty for over 6 months. This benefit is not means tested so savings and income are not taken in to account. You do not have to be receiving help from a carer to apply and you do not have to spend the allowance on care.
The application form for Attendance Allowance is regrettably rather long and difficult to complete without professional help. I have been assisting people to apply for benefits for almost 30 years and this form is one of the worst at 31 pages long.
