By Steve Carson Irvine Lake anglers received

some unfortunate news from General Manager Dave Noyes, who announced that “due to a change in our insurance cover- age, we are suspending the opera- tion of all boats and watercraft by the public on the lake, which also applies to rental boats. Hopefully this will be a temporary situation, and we hope to have our rental fleet available again soon.” On the fishing front, Whitney

Curry at the Pro Shop reported that the overall catfish bite has been good for shore anglers using Carolina rigs to get their bait a lit- tle further out. A few anglers have also used bobbers to suspend their bait just above the bottom. The best catfish baits were mack- erel, shrimp, bonito, skipjack, and chicken liver. A new lake record was set for

one of the Orange County im- poundment’s “alternate species” -- a monster carp caught and re- leased that weighed 37 pounds. For the last several weeks, a few secretive anglers have been ap-

plying advanced European spe- cialty carp techniques, and have been doing very well. Not every- body here in the USA knows that carp are actually the world’s most popular game fish. Most catfish anglers have been concentrating on the west shore- line for decent stringers of three to six-pound eating-size fish. The usual baits like mackerel and shrimp have been productive, and a popular new rig is fishing a chunk of liver under a bobber. Bass anglers roamed a number

of different spots, including the back of the flats and the far end of the west shore. Poppers and other topwaters were the most common choice for bassers. Most bass reported were largemouth in the two to four-pound range, with some larger fish reported chasing swimbaits. Largemouth bass and a few wipers have even been boil- ing on shad along the west shore. Bluegill and redear sunfish

were active on mealworms near submerged brush, and a few hy- brid striped bass were caught in- cidentally. Carp specialists found some good size specimens biting

on various flavors of homemade boilies off the west shore. The 2015-16 public Trout Sea-

son Opener will take place on Friday, October 30. Thousands of pounds of beautiful Nebraska Tailwalker rainbow trout will be stocked just prior to the opener, and then re-stocked weekly all winter long.

Bat myths busted at Tucker

Find out why people should appreciate — and not fear — Southern California’s furry fliers at “Bat Night,” Saturday, Oct. 17, at an interpretive program offered by Cal State Fullerton’s Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary.
