Greenbelt may put “park” in Villa Park The City of Villa Park doesn’t

have any parks. The closest thing to a park within city limits is the greenbelt on Wanda, a narrow strip of grass on the east side of the street between Collins and Villa Park Road. On the north end, there is a welcoming entrance sign with plantings provided by Girl Scouts.

More plantings grace the south end. The Villa Park Community Ser-

vices Foundation regularly holds its dog adoption event, Walk With A Friend, there, but other than stu- dents biking on the sidewalk and a few pedestrians, the expanse is largely under-used. In keeping with water conserva-

tion measures, the city plans to re- move the turf and install drought- tolerant plants. The design was ex- panded to include a resident-friend- ly walking trail, drinking fountain and, at the suggestion of Mayor Diana Fascenelli, a bocce ball court. Fascenelli recalled fun fam- ily games at neighbor Frank and

Eileen DeSantis’ backyard bocce ball court, and hopes to “encourage residents and families to enjoy the outdoors.” The city has entertained numer-

ous suggestions for its only open space, including a community cen- ter or playground. Safety near a busy street is an issue, and parking

there is problematic. Vehicles must park on Fitschen Ranch Road, on the other side of a block wall that travels the length of the greenbelt, with pedestrian openings on either end. Public comments are wel- come; a public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 14 at the civic center.

Students at Orange Lutheran High School commemorated Sept. 11 by placing 2,977 American flags in front of the school. The flags honored those who lost their lives on that day in 2001.

Entries in a water conservation art contest were among the exhibits at the City of Tustin’s first-ever water expo, held Sept. 19, at Pepper- tree Park. “Let’s Get Smart About Water – Every Drop Counts” also featured workshops and demonstrations, ranging from drought toler- ant landscaping and lawn alternatives to green technology, rebate programs and water saving tips.
