but “art that could make people believe in the story presented in his new way on screen—to make the audience not only laugh, but cry!” Illusions and escape for all. All he really wanted in life was to
have happiness forever in a make- believe childhood that would nev- er end—with friends. Lucky for him, his brother Roy held tight to the ribbons of Walt’s kites. What a visionary Disney was to create destination places where old and young continue to enjoy “escap- ing” together.
I only question
the cynical criticism of some cre- ative arts columnists these days who feel that entire generations of children were “traumatized” by “Bambi” or, the opposite, that the output is too sentimental. My belief is that—at least when I was a child—I had already received large collections of folk and fairy tales and Felix Salten’s “Bambi” as book gifts beautifully illus- trated. I still have some today that my children also enjoyed. Seeing those books spring to life on ani- mated fi lm—starting in 1938--was a spectacular joy.
What would a man of Walt Dis- ney’s vision do today to build up the small town of Likely, Califor- nia in northeastern Modoc County, --population currently 62, elev. 4,449 ft?
Another new magical
PBS series, “America’s Heart- land,” features the fi ne McGarvey family who are trying hard to hand on, from generation to generation, their cattle ranch. They do not wish to lose Likely the way nearby Madeleine folded when the school closed after that post offi ce shut down. They said they need new young families to join them to help Lively grow again. When ranchers living there tried to come up with a name one of them said: “Do you ever think it “likely” that we’ll come up with a name?” Supposedly a true story! One fantastic stretch of land there is accompanied by “an old 3BR homestead” 5700 County Road 66, on sale for $2, 700,000. When you stop hiccupping, consider that the price includes 3, 342+/- acres, the whole West Valley Reservoir, three miles of private stream, all water wonders that can sustain
fi shing, boating and the irrigation of much acreage. The house part has a well for the single user. What an astonishingly beautiful country we live in.
The tv pre-
sentation of the working cattle ranch the McGarvey family op- erates showed such wide open acreage with enviable amounts of water. Far more open than the ranch lands in and around Lamar, Colorado in the southeastern por- tion of that state or the more Eu- ropean-style Amish farm lands in Pennsylvania.
One can only gasp and grasp at optical illusions in envision- ing what could be imagined in a creative mind willing to suspend disbelief when one thinks of the endless possibilities.
Another not to be missed docu- mentary on PBS is the hour long biography of Jim Henson. An “original, incessantly creative” mind. The viewer is invited back- stage with again much marvelous archival footage. What would the world be like without reminisc- ing about Kermit and Miss Piggy? What a hardened heart one would have not to love the Swedish chef! An author of magical books chil- dren relish is British Roald Dahl who wrote, “Those who don’t be- lieve in magic will never fi nd it!” Be ready with Halloween treats for the optical illusions that will come knocking at your door! Happy haunting!~ Ellie

life long well being, Okinawan tradition goes deeper. First, it speaks of the importance of life-long loyalties and commit- ments -- starting young. Sec- ond, it asks us to extend fam- ily-style welcome to everyone we meet, to count the stranger as that friend we haven’t yet met. That’s a big stretch, but worth working on. Many indigenous tribes be-
lieve we’re all connected in the Web of Life. Practices then emerge to cherish, respect, nourish our relationships with “all sentient beings,“ and to imagine humanity as a single sangha (song-ah) --spiritual community. First Nation Lako- ta tribes teach mitakuye oyasin (mee-tah-koo-yay oy-ah-sin)– all are relations. Mayans greet each other saying, “In Lak’ech Ala K’in” --I am another your- self. Now that’s something to Shine deLight on. Happy October, Marcia

JOKES & Humor # 5
A golfer, playing a round by himself, is about to tee off, and a greasy little salesman runs up to him, and yells, “Wait! Before you tee off, I have something really amazing to show you!” The golfer, annoyed, says, “What is it?” “It’s a special golf ball,” says the salesman. “You can never lose it!” “Whattaya mean,” scoffs the golfer, “you can never lose it? What if you hit it into the water?”
“No problem,” says the salesman. “It fl oats, and it detects where the shore is, and spins towards it.”
“Well, what if you hit it into the woods?” “Easy,” says the sales- man. “It emits a beeping sound, and you can fi nd it with your eyes closed.” “Okay,” says the golfer, impressed. “But what if your round goes late and it gets dark?” “No problem, sir, this golf ball glows in the dark! I’m telling you, you can never lose this golf ball!” The golfer buys it at once. “Just one question,” he says to the salesman. “Where did you get it?”
“I found it.” Advertise in Upbeat?
