THE BEST I’VE SEEN
This issue focusses on things that some companies do well. Things that are WOW. Most of us Canadians are slow to brag about the things we do, but there are some plants that need to be recog- nized for their contributions to our industry. Let me tell you about a few.
I would say the nicest lobby I have seen is a tie between Gillette’s Fabricare, Country Hills, Calgary and Westpoint Cleaners. Gillette’s has wood panels and matching counters. The lobby is quite wide with lots of room for customers and their clothes. There is a hole through the wall to drop incoming orders into a buggy for tagging.
Westpoint Cleaners in Calgary has stone tiles that con- tinue up the front of the count- er. They also have a TV on the wall tuned to a news channel. They partner with a local art gallery and have one or two pieces on display, and a small card with the gallery informa- tion on the bottom if someone is interested. The paintings on display are changed every few weeks. Classic Cleaners in Red Deer, Alberta have just reno- vated their front lobby. A large glass door leads to the Tuxedo rental department. They have a huge area for bridal alterations that includes a changing room for the bride, which is quite large and often in use. Dolphin Cleaners in
Calgary has an eye-catching display in one of their lobbies. They have mounted a dryer front panel on the wall and put a fish tank behind, so it looks
like the fish are in the dryer. Kids especially are fascinated by it.
Parkland Coverall Clean-
ing in Red Deer, Alberta has the largest water recycling system that we have put in. It has an insulated 5,000-gallon tank – outside. And no, it never freezes. There is enough water volume and circulation that it never cools off. The water is used by the dry cleaning machines for cooling, then it goes into the holding tank and the warmed water is used to fi ll the washers. They are buy- ing half as much water and not having to heat it as much. The most interesting con- veyor award goes to Scrub- A-Dub Coin Laundry and Drycleaning in Medicine Hat, Alberta. They have a coin laun- dry on the main floor and a wet cleaning plant on the third fl oor. A conveyor goes straight up the wall, transporting
