LETTER FROM BATH PLACE

What’s up at the AGR office

Hi, As I hope you have realised, this is a time of great change for AGR. The launch of AGR Professional in the summer shows our commitment to developing new products and services, but we also have an expanding team with new faces and new ideas. I joined in June, just in time for the Conference, which gave me a great insight into the current challenges in the industry, and the corresponding opportunities for AGR to support you.

Having come from a membership organisation – I was at ACCA for 13 years, a member of AGR, so I’ve seen it from both sides of the fence – I know how important it is to listen. Our members are the reason we exist, and making sure we’re delivering the best possible value is our top priority. What is obvious from the conversations I’ve had so far is that you are diverse, and you have different expectations and needs. We’ve got a lot of success to build on – feedback from the conference was positive, there’s been a great reaction to the growing data sets we are sharing,

and our first webinar within AGR Professional on unconscious bias was well attended.

But we can do more to attract you back to the sector focus groups: we can create even richer insights through our research programme and develop a strong voice for the industry with our government and influencers. Thankfully the new AGR team will help Stephen and I do all of this. While we say a fond farewell to Claire, Harriett and Maïlys and thank them for all their hard work, we welcome Tony (Learning & Development Manager), Vivienne and Samantha (Membership & Events Manager and Officer) and Tej (Communications Officer) with open arms.

Alongside developing the membership scheme, my role includes all the operational activities that keep AGR running. So I’m getting my teeth into our finances, the IT and CRM systems, the governance structure and our risk profile. All the good stuff that makes the business world go round! What is really pleasing is that your AGR

Board members are getting involved in all these projects and more, and having their industry insight and expertise on hand is important, especially for those of us that have some catching up to do.

I have enjoyed working with and for membership organisations, and have seen many different operating structures, sizes, sectors and missions. They are very different to commercial businesses, and they all have a common core of representing a profession or an industry and being entirely dependent on their membership, making our job one of both leadership and service. Thank you for my really warm welcome over the past few weeks, and I hope you’re as excited about the future of AGR as I am.

Best wishes,

AGR Sarah Hathaway joined as Head of Business Operations in July, Tej Kaur Rai as Communications Officer in August and Tony Karafilovski as Learning & Development Manager in September. The team also welcomed Vivienne Wootten, Membership & Events Manager, and Samantha Gudsell, Membership & Events Officer.
