Finding the right fit with cabin wear

was Chris Watchorn’s choice as a place to launch his own cabin wear brand after he completed a six-month scholarship with the brand 3sixteen in New York City. Winnipeg is Chris’ home city, but the young owner and designer of Oak + Oar

fashion brand had other important rea- sons for his choice. “It’s a smaller city, and I feel like it is easier to spread the word brand-wise,” says Chris. “I have a lot of good friends here, a lot of people who are really supportive.” While in New York, Chris was exposed to the many facets of producing a cloth- ing brand, and he used that experience to start up Oak + Oar. Te brand launched


in the summer of 2012. “I’m self-employed now doing Oak +


Oar full-time,” he adds, that and produc- ing a second line of clothing, in denim, branded Olé. He and two Saskatchewan friends started up that company this summer and its products quickly ap- peared on the sales racks in a handful of Canadian stores. Te two projects keep Chris pretty busy.
