32 business focus Confidence climbing – engagement falling

Reports from leading recruiter GCS show that, although confidence in our economy is still growing, organisations must continue to focus on employee engagement to ensure they retain staff in a competitive marketplace

BENEFITS WITHOUT BENEFIT

The research from GCS indicates that the majority of employees are unsatisfied with their benefits packages. Since GCS’ last survey in 2013, workers appear to have changed their views on the benefits most important to them. But packages offered by employers are yet to change. While it is uncommon for a candidate to choose to work for a company solely on the strength of its benefits package, it does become an increasingly important factor when a candidate is looking for differentiators between two prospective employers.

Organisations that can be flexible enough to provide packages tailored to their employees will be far more likely to win the race for talent.

AN EYE TO THE FUTURE

In 2013, employees wanted share options and pensions. In 2015 however, the majority prioritise training support as their most desired benefit. It seems that employees are happy to sacrifice a short-term benefit for long-term gain. Training and upskilling typically leads to career progression and therefore, increased remuneration.

65% of permanent workers feel stagnant with their current employer. CONTRACT IMPORTANCE

The survey also indicates that permanent workers are becoming more open to contract opportunities, and employers are becoming more accustomed to taking on contract resource. In 2013, 49% of companies were unlikely to use contractors. In 2015, this has dropped to just 33%.

Businesses appear to understand what contractors want. But many companies overestimate the value of security to a contractor. As long as the location and rate are acceptable, contractors are less concerned about the length of the assignment. The increase in contract roles available has given contractors confidence that it won’t take long to locate another assignment, particularly those with niche or in-demand skills.

Yet 87% believe they have the skills to move their career forward. If you combine this with a disconnect in benefits packages, you can see why some organisations could have an employee engagement issue.

Businesses that are able to provide dedicated training support and a transparent career path will undoubtedly have a happier workforce.

GCS sales director Lisa Forrester commented on these findings: ”Our research has shown that there are many areas where there is a difference between what employees want and what employers offer. Quite simply, for those looking to keep their top talent as their business grows – the key to staff retention is engagement.”

These findings are from GCS Recruitment Specialist research conducted in 2015 with approximately 1,000 respondents across the Thames Valley. To discuss these findings, or anything recruitment related, contact Lisa Forrester.
