SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING

Making a £7 billion impact in the south

Manufacturers across the south feature in The Business Magazine’s new listing, the Southern Manufacturing 100, in the pages that follow

And, because we highlight not just the top 100 but also the next 50, the list provides an interesting insight into the wealth of manufacturing and engineering companies in the south.

Sponsored by law firm Shoosmiths, NatWest bank, advisory firm MHA MacIntyre Hudson, global insurance broker JLT, and technology solutions provider Taylor Made, the Southern Manufacturing 100 helps shine the spotlight on this key sector.

Publisher David Murray said: ”We might think of the Midlands and the north as being the heartland of manufacturing in the UK. But there are actually more manufacturing companies in the south than in other regions. They tend to be smaller-scale manufacturers and specialist engineering companies – many are leading-edge and worldbeaters.

”We might have MINI in Oxford; major aerospace and defence companies in Hampshire; and many more global brands in the region, but our Manufacturing 100 focuses on home- grown companies, including some strong SMEs, that are an intrinsic part of the local business framework.”

Companies in the list have annual sales ranging from just under £6 million to TI Automotive at the top, with a £2 billion turnover.

The combined turnover for the complete list is more than £7 billion and together the companies employ some 53,500 people.

As part of the campaign, manufacturers will be invited to participate in Roundtable discussions about the key issues affecting the sector, now and in the future.

These include the fact that over the next few years, there will be an estimated 1.8 million vacancies in the UK that require engineering skills.

Global expansion is expected in the nuclear industry, and even shale gas production in the UK could lead to an increasing demand for engineers.

Manufacturing is also changing – new processes are being introduced at an increasing speed, and manufacturers need to be fleet of foot to keep ahead of their competitors. Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, is just one example of how the roadmap is altering.
